How many of you thought you were going to be better than you are when you started?

Hello.

Im going to start training soon and I feel like I'm going to be really good. I'm not arrogant, in fact I'm humble by nature. I just have a gut feeling that I'm a naturally good boxer. I have good timing, quick on my feet, fluid movement, and I like to get hit.

I know that technique is going to take a lot of time and practice but once I get that down I feel I will be very good.

So is there anyone else who before they actually started training felt that they would end up being a spectacular boxer -- or thought they they were even before starting?

how did fantasy compare to reality?
 
when I started man, I couldn't throw and accurate punch to save my life. I was almost all haymakers.

After a few years of work my striking has improved exponentially.

you don't realize how wrong you are about yourself until you start training
 
not really..im sure your thinking will change when you get in the gym for the first time. Its easy to think your going to be the hottest shit ever, but in our heads we are all the best..and can do this and that well, when really we aint as good as we think.

You may be a athletic guy, which will help you..but before training you cant really think i am going to be good. Id say go in thinking like i am going to train to become the best. But it just doesnt happen.

Like the poster above said, everything you think you know is probably wrong..shit i thought i was badass when i first went in, that changed the first time i sparred and i kinda learnt the hard way.

Talent doesn't mean shit unless you've got drive. How hard are you willing to work? Also until you step into a gym you're really not going to have any idea what sort of potential you have. You say you like getting hit but you might have to reevaluate that statement when someone who actually knows how to punch clocks you. Its a lot less fun.

I did the same. It was fine because I was there to learn, but subconsciously I thought, man I'm gonna school this guy. I.....did not school him....

that's probably what it'll take. You'll have to get smoked a few times in sparring and then you'll pick up humility real fast.

Don't let it get to you though, if you have the talent you pick it up pretty quick
 
I never thought and still don't think I have the physical ability and natural talent to be a great fighter. But my head can't accept that lol.

If I have a bad sparring session I obsess over it and run it through my head until I spar again. If I have a decent sparring session I'm be pleased on the drive home but by the time I get home I'll have picked it apart and made myself realise that I did in fact have a bad sparring session.

Only once have I left the gym and thought "that went ok" and didn't think about it afterwards; and that's what I don't like lol
 
When I first started, I thought I was the worst at everything lol. Not the best. However when I got a few months of training under my belt, I got a little cocky. Thought just because I knew what a 1,2,3,4,5,6 was that I knew defense, foot work, counters, etc.

But that mindset was put aside pretty quickly. Now, I never under estimate anyone, even the beginners. Because in my eyes, everyone has a punchers chance.

Good news, you will figure it out soon! Bad news, reality hurts sometime (literally and figuratively speaking)!

Good to be confident though, and who knows, some guys really are just "gifted". But that natural ability is only as good as the ability to LEARN to use it to it's greatest potential. There have been Champions from both ends of that spectrum, I.E: Roy Jones Jr. "naturally gifted" as they get, and on the opposite end Bernard Hopkins "not naturally gifted" when he began, but had a work ethic and the will to become a champion....... like my signature says, and I truly believe "genius is 1% inspiration 99% perspiration".
 
I thought I would be hopeless and terrible when I first started. Took me a while before I realized I'm actually not bad. Not that I'm GOOD, I've only trained for a year, but I'm not bad.

No offense, but I strongly suspect your first sparring session will be a big wake-up call for you. Nearly everyone gets taken apart, and spends half of each round turtling up and backing away with closed eyes :P

Most noobs think they'll be good. This is usually because they can't visualise what being beaten is like. The gap between expectation and reality when you have someone firing at you is large. Expect to be turning your back, closing your eyes, lifting your head.

No one is good from the get go. It takes time.
 
First time I got in the ring to spar I thought I would kill people because I was big, strong and fast. Learned in about 15 seconds that I sucked. I still suck, I'm just better at avoiding getting hit and better at landing a few shots here and there.
 
I'm kinda waiting for nutz to come in here, interesting to see what he'll say. To the ts you probably won't know if you'll be a good boxer until you actually box. Kinda like you won't know if you're a good swimmer unless you go into the water.
 
In my experience it's usually the most talented that quit first. It's not challenging enough so they just bounce from gym to gym never really becoming anyone. The other big factor is life; people start training and get super excited so they train regularly for maybe 6-12 months take a fight or two show they have potential then life happens. Job changes, girlfriends, hanging out with buddies, get married, join the military, go to school, or just get lazy. It take a lot of sacrifice to make training apart of your life for years on end,or to make it a career. I've been training and running martial arts schools for 14 years now, and almost every training partner I've ever had in that time doesn't train any more.

I wish you good luck TS, mostly just take it day by day and have fun.
 
I'm a kinesthetic learner so I thought I'd catch on pretty quick, I was right. I'm no expert by any means, but I'm pretty good to be fairly new. I also haven't sparred with anyone who has been training for a LONG time, so my opinion on my skills will probably change, lol.
 
I'm a slow learner, thank fuck I've got a patient boxing coach.
 
I thought I'd be worse actually. My kicks were way,way better than they had any right to be.
 
yeah when i started i thought: it can't be that hard, theres your opponent over there, go and hit him. once your fit enough thats that.

I couldn't of been more wrong.

i spent the first few months being consistantly punched in the face whilst never landing any punches of my own. im still pretty poor now but im slowly improving.

my advice would be: do not go to the gym with the attitude that your a badass. it will end in tears.
 
considering I started at Jackson's I walked in on the first day fully expecting to get my ass handed to me, but prove I wanted to learn. I was not disappointed lol.

At the end of kickboxing class we did light sparring. The guy I sparred was very good and owned me. He didn't hurt me and actually gave me tips and encouraged me as we were sparring while still making me look silly.

Grappling practice was more of the same. After that day I was completely hooked and wanted to get good.

Honestly if you go to your gym with no training and think you will do great, and actually do very well against the guys there on day one you should probably change gyms.
 
It's pretty pathetic looking back now and remembering myself when I first started to train. I thought after a few months under my belt I'd be able to chuck norris people. My first day of sparring I quickly learned that anyone can be a very tough opponent no matter how small they may be or wimpy looking they may be.
