I think it's going to be a lot more. The current panic shopping and lack of supplies, the stress of losing your entire retirement, losing your job, the suicides and sickness resulting from it all, general misery... The measures being taken are going to cause thousands and thousands more deaths than C-19, and it's going to affect far, far more healthy working people. China has lost 5,000 from it so far, and the sick season is nearing an end. Those Chinese people spread all over China in that first month. Mono is more dangerous.

What is really dangerous to peoples health is a collapsed economy. More dangerous than the really bad cold we are facing. EDIT: 1% death rate is much worse than a really bad cold. The measures being taken could potentially, eventually, cause more misery in peoples lives than C-19.

EDIT: I'm conflicted on the matter. I still think it's a very tight balancing act, and that 3 weeks of total lockdown for about everybody would have been better than what we are currently doing, if it lasts more than 6 weeks or so.

This thread is a perfect example of the delusional absurdity of the "just a flu" bros.

got a chuckle out of the poll choices though.

I'll definitely admit when it starts killing people (especially healthy people) at a significant overall rate. Oh, and it's a virus that makes people sick that is transmitted through contact with people that have it. There are enough similarities to make the comparisons.

What this forum really needs but doesn't have yet is a thread about the coronavirus.

This is more about the impending economic collapse caused by the overreaction, which should have been limited to at risk populations.

I do agree that until millions or hundreds of millions die. It isnt black plague level. That killed hundreds of millions.

The part you don't understand is that this isn't an either/or. You can limit interpersonal exposure down in ways that curbs the spread but affects the economy adversely or you can not take those measures and have it spread more rapidly and extensively and guess what, that will affect the economy adversely too.

Probably not a good thing if we have way more people needing intensive and emergency care than we have capacity in the hospitals, especially in a country where millions are un- or underinsured. People would to miss work too from being sick or dead too. That also creates problems in the supply chain.

The virus is a vessel for many to resort to violence and theft.

It's people that are the real danger imo.

Yes, and the at-risk population in the US is estimated at about 60 percent.
The new coronavirus is a serious threat to the elderly, as federal officials have been at pains to note recently. But they have stepped gingerly around advice for another group of Americans also at special risk from the infection: those with chronic health conditions.

It is not a small group. An estimated 60 percent of all Americans have at least one chronic health condition, and 40 percent have more than one. (The figures include the elderly.) Heart disease, cancer, diabetes — all of these can exacerbate a coronavirus infection, studies show, increasing the odds of severe disease and death.

So yeah, while healthy young adults and children have little risk of dying, they can still infect those who are more vulnerable. And beyond just the substantial number of elderly in this country are the millions on CPAP or dialysis.

We are not going to suffer an economic collapse, but we can't sustain all of this shutting shit down forever. The virus isn't going to go away until we find a vaccine, and we can't afford to keep everything shut down waiting for that. After two weeks, these sports leagues need to get up off their asses and resume their seasons. Time go back to living.

    ^This is exactly the issue.

A run on people pulling their money out of banks would get real interesting too.

I’m much more worried about peoples over reaction to this than the virus itself.

Never seen colleges, universities and sporting events being cancelled for the flu. Harvard cancelled all of their classes and told students to leave the dorms in 5 days. I assume Harvard has some pretty competent folks making decisions and assessing situations.

One and the same. Economy is screwed no matter the approach to the virus and yes a full market crash will kill lots of people.

Alright lets continue normal life, have most people get the coronavirus, and have this virus be rampant as the flu, have most of the world population get it....have 3% of the population die.

Yep that's much better..lets do nothing at all.

BTW dumbass, you do know only 3k people have died in china because China actually did the effort to stop it right? They even locked people in and shit..... If they had continued just living life regularly, it will be way fucking more.
