Ive been doing No-Gi for about a year now, twice a week. And Ideally if I could find a place in West Side Los Angeles that was purely no gi, I'd be in heaven..Ive been putting off Gi Training because im a cheap ass but im finally giving in and dedicating more time to BJJ.

Since I realized 4 pairs of atama summer gi's, is going to cost me about $310 and now I have to wash every week (i live in an apartment) so I stay fresh and clean for class.

How many kimonos/gi's do you currently own and how much have you spent?

dude with the new prices 4 atamas will cost you more than 310

haha yep...

i currently have 3, 1 for tournaments, and the other 2 for training.

i'm selling one on ebay (search machado gi) because its like an inch too short now. this week i'm getting another gi, most likely an ISAMI, then a vulkan next month.

so three machado gis, one at $100, the other two at $130. thats $360 plus an Isami $170, and a vulkan $90

total to be $620 soon

here's my timeline of Gis... bold is what i currently have

1. Atama Gold (ripped after 1 yr everyday use) 2003-04 ripped a month before i got my blue belt
2. Dragao Armlock (sold, didn't like) 2003-03
3. Machado Gold Weave(fell in love, older model ripped after 2 years, tears) 2003-2005
4. KF Fighter (ripped) 2003-2005
5. Vasco KF Fighter (accidentaly thrown away by someone) 2004-06
6. Machado (Coach was able to find me the old model that i loved sold out forever, now my comp gi u sed 4 times) 2004-current
7. Vulkan (amazing, just ripped a month ago after everyday use for a yr) 2006-07
8. Machado 2006 edition Gold (Selling on ebay right now under "machado gi" tad too small) 2006-07
9. Machado Hybrid 2006 (love it, very light!) 2006-current

ive been known to go through gis like nothing, problem is, everytime i have money to buy a gi to alternate with, the other one rips. so then that new one is used everyday for a year till i can afford to buy another, then rip again.

i train w/ gi 2-3 times a week and i own 2 gis.... i have my own washer/dryer though so i can keep em clean w/out too much effort

Well I guess this brings me to ask.. How often do you guys wear your gi's before washing? I know some people sweat a lot and its wierd for me to think that you'd wear it a couple times before washing.

Is 10th Planet too much of a drive for you?

Sadly yes, I work down by LAX and live on the westside, to fight the traffic to get to 10th planet on time is horrendous.

i was mine after every use, unless its a super light day thats just technique

pretty much everyone at my gym washes their gi after every class.

I dont understand your problems with money. Just buy a 50 dollar unbleached HCK gi. Wash it after every use. DONE.

I have about 3 gis that I actually train with. I train three or four times a week. I started about three years ago and still have the single weave atama I started with. I've always had a rotation of gis, just because I heard it prolongs the life. I actually always throw my gis in the dryer, which I know isn't good for them, but I do it anyways. To be honest, I heard in the last year or so, Atama's quality has really dipped. That, coupled with their new prices that were bumped up around April Fool's day, I don't think you should go with Atama gis. Sirius, HCK and Vulkans are much better buys, IMO.

I have an old century judo gi that I got for free when I first started grappling, then I spent $100 for a Gameness and $60 for a Vulkan (The Vulkan I didn't think I would win on ebay, but I did). Next: Groundforce Hemp gi. Nowadays, I just use the gameness for practice.

2 gis.

A no name judo gi that's way too big for bjj. I'm gonna look to sell it/give it away to a friend when I get a new gi. Took shitty advice from shop assistant and bought one way too big for me (2 rotations around the wrist and the opponent can still hang on to the sleeve)

A brazilian fightwear/atama gi. Not too bad. Don't have much to compare it to but I like it.

I have 3. That seems to be plenty to get me through a week because I have 2 gis to use until i get the first one clean so i just cycle my way though wear and wash.

Just don't be that guy who doesnt wash his gi at least after every 2 classes.

I only have one judo gi. Its cheap and durable. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a cheap gi that will last. The brand is HSU. As far as washing I only wash once or twice a week. I don't have the time. I hang the gi to air dry in my garage though so it doesnt' smell too bad.

Like Ive stated before I live in a complex so I hate to run down and use the washign machines when its available, so I gotta leave things to chance at times.

I also might train up to 4 days a week so I might need 5 gis in case I get lazy and cant wash in time.

If Im aiming for affordability, I shouldnt be looking at Atama summer weaves? HCK a better alternative?

I also seeminly fall inbetween sizes :\ being 5'9 and 155lbs, Im guessing to go a bit bigger and toss em in the dryer to shrink em down a tad will help.

my instructor has 20 gis and i had him sell me a krugans for $40 :)

i now have three gis with the krugans but ill give that to a friend
