how long did it take bj penn to get a bb?

that just sounds stupid to give someone more then a brown belt no matter how talented they are.
with that amount of training

it is Bj Penn. You have seen what he can do, he deserved it.

5 years....some say 4, but it was like 4 years and 11 months. Premature? fuck that he had it for a couple of weeks and won the Mundials. You probably could of used google for this.

Well, if hes constantly winning tournaments at ANY belt and training up to 3 times a day, then he does deserve it. :icon_chee

Andre Galvao whos also a world champion and Pan-Am champion, started BJJ when he was 17 and got his black belt when he was 22, thats 5 years of training, not to mention with world class BJJ guys such as Eduardo Telles and Fernando Terere Agosto and training 7 days a week.

So, with all the facts and concrete details I've put on the table, how is it stupid for someone to get more than a brown in that amount of training? Please, I wanna hear :icon_twis

I heard he popped out of the womb wearing a black belt.

Then he demanded a title shot against Fedor.

Oh by the way, here are B.J's BJJ statistics from his official website http://www.BJPenn.com

June, 1997 Enters the Joe Moreira tournament as a blue belt winning his weight class.
June, 1997 Wins submission grappling tournament
1997 Enters Brasileiro and places 4th in his weight class, blue belt category
1997 Continues to enter tournaments upon return from Brazil placing first consistently
1997 Receives blue belt from Ralph Gracie
1998 Silver medal at Brazilian Mundials competition in his weight division; receives purple belt upon return
1999 Bronze medal at Brazilian Mundials in heavier weight class as a newly promoted Nova Uniao brown belt.

one of the stupidest things i've heard in my life

This is BJJ, not some McDojo bullshit art.

In BJJ, if you beat blackbelts, then you get a black belt.

Dont matter how many hours you punch in.

Just because we don't get our BB in like 4 years doesn't mean he shouldn't. Hell...if you deserve it, you get it; that's the way BJJ goes.

yeah these guys train up to 12-14 times a week.
They deserve the belts they wear.. hell they dominated their divisions at that age as well.

Anyone who has trained even close to that amount knows the dedication it takes to keep with it.. especially over the years. Injuries mount, life gets in the way, people are there to talk shit and hold you back.. it takes alot of sacrifice and dedication to make it to a black belt that fast.
While everyone else was going to college drinking and partying with their friends.. these guys were sweating their asses off, getting their arms broken, sleeping waking up and doing it all over again. They deserve everything they have achieved.

It pisses me off when someone thinks that it just comes natural. People say it to me "oh you just pick this up naturaly.. its easy for you" and i want to say "No you fuck face, im here every day.. i spend 50% of what i earn to train bjj every day. I train twice a fucking day.. my back hurts, my body hurts to the core.. i cant drink, i cant smoke.. i dont go party.. it doesnt come natural.. i sacrifice eveyrthing in my life to get where i am and you just negated everything i did to get here.. because your pathetic white collar ass thinks it comes easy"

No one became a champion by training 2x a week and just getting it naturally.. every single person who is there has busted their ass and made sacrifices to get to the top. Any one of you could achieve the same thing if you gave up as much as these guys did... My hats off to Bj penn and Andre Galvao.. they are true bad asses.

chill boyee but you made a really good point though

Gsoares is correct. He put in a ridiculous amount of training time. He became obsessed with Jiu Jitsu. Not only did he put in the mat time, but he was winning competitions.

He worked for that belt. He may be very naturally gifted, but he still worked for the belt and deserves his credit.

If that's a quote from you, you deserve a hell of respect, my friend. If not, it was nice to think that about you.

He was asked this exact question in the most recent issue of "Grappling' and his response was......

Q: At the time, you got your black belt in Brazillian jiu-jitsu faster than anyone else in this country

BJ Penn:That's called obsessive-compulsive disorder (laughs).

Q: How long did it take?

BJ Penn: I think it was right around 3 years. Uep. I trained a lot! I was thinking about jiu-jitsu every single day , every second of the day! It would never ever leave my head. No matter what I was doing. I could be taking a shower, anything, and it would just be nonstop going through my head. One day it just stopped, and I'm glad (laughs). Now I just don't have to obsess about jiu-jitsu as much anymore. Once in a while I get the fire going a little bit again and start obsessing about certain moves, but not like it was.
