When does this guy get his respect from the ufc? He’s on a 6 fight win streak, while pettis hasn’t even fought at lightweight lately and has basically a lose-win-lose record, hasn't beaten anybody at lightweight in the last few years.

He just hasn't got any big name wins yet. As soon as he does he'll jump up through the rankings. Allthough I'm sure it's not easy to get that first big name on your list - cause no one wants to fight a good fighter with a low rank.

Islam is possibly a better LW at this point in time but Makhachev still hasn't beaten anyone to really push him up the ranks. He needs to get some real fights.

Fightmatrix, for example, uses an ELO rankings and they have Makhachev at #18 in the world (includes outside UFC). He's a good fighter who's fighting pretty solid guys, but he isn't fighting any top guys.

UFC protects top fighters by keeping upcoming fighters from breaking into top 10, especially top 5. It's a business first then a sport.
