How I interpret those who say Gustafsson beat Jones

The only argument that can be made for a Gus victory, is that he narrowly won three uneventful rounds while point fighting against a champion who finished strong while he faded.

Gus knew the fight was close going into the 5th, yet he choose to fight to survive/not get knocked out instead of fight to win.

A solid case can be made for either fighter getting the nod, saying one 'clearly' one is basically admitting you're biased towards one fighter.
