How good was Matt Hughes as a grappler?

That would have been impressive enough.
But this wasn't even a guillotine. It was like a head-and-arm choke from a front-headlock position... The only one I can ever remember being finished in the UFC.

Like an inverted arm triangle

Since when is Tito the gold standard of grappling?
Didn't say he was. But he was a two time JC state champ and all american, and probably had close to 40 pounds on Hughes. Hughes himself was a 2 time all american in college iirc and beat Ricardo Almeida and Jeremy Horn in ADCC...so yeah I'd say he was an elite grappler for the time.

Good enough to out BJJ really good BJJ black belts without actually having a BJJ belt. Kinda like Jon Jones.

He's in the A category. Royce, after Matt beat him, said he was happy Matt used BJJ to beat him. Matt later corrected him and said he just used regular wrestling.

I've watched some Hughes old fights and I realized he had a bjj well above average UFC elite wreslters. He has around thirteen subs in his career, a pretty expressive number for a wreslter
