How good was Chael Sonnen back in his heydays?

Remember, Chael only tapped to Silva because he thought you could tap and only lose the round. Simple misunderstanding of the rules. He actually wom that fight.
I don't even think he tapped. He seemed to be finding a way to grip Silva's hand, he was finding the ideal grip position in a quick way. When he thought it had worked which was when the referee stopped, he didn't even notice the referee was stopping... He seemed to have fought against the arm bar and was already ready to punch and go to ground and pound. Silva hadn't even loosened his grip iirc. This shows that Chael managed to fight the armbar and was getting out of it to be on top... I think that's why he was so frustrated with the stoppage.

Knowing how he was better but didn't get the win might have crushed his mentality a lot. But he still did very well against Silva 2 and could have also defeated Jon Jones if the toe breaking technique were noticed by the referee. When the referee stopped, he also got upmreally quickly, like knowing they screwed it up again as he had just broken JJ's toe with his meticulous wrestling used to damage. He even pointed to the toe that they say was in the arena and threw it at the crowd in anger at the stoppage. Some ppl say he did it. Idk. But he had a legit case for having defeated JJ and Silva, which would be among the best 2 wins in MMA history. He also has an amazing speaking ability for all the time he fought. It seems he is speaking even faster and with a better diction than before. And he is smart enough to be part of the UFC brass right now too... I don't think there was any fighter like him.

Never lost a fight, never told a lie, beat Anderson Silva 5 rounds to 2.

Chael is a GOAT. Never tapped, never knocked out, never lost a single round. Biggest arms with all the charm. Greatest trash talker of all time. He would have had Muhammad Ali’s head spinning on the mic, and on his ass in a street fight. He’s a gangster from the mean streets of West Linn, Oregon. He grew a lifetime supply of carrots for the poor and hungry Nogueria family with one hand, and patted Anderson Silvas wife on the ass goodbye while making his way out the back door with the other.

Death once had a near Chael experience.

Chael double legged the universe into existence. When it hit the mat, they called it the Big Bang.

Each of Chael’s testicles are larger than the other one.

He once turned his head and spit towards the east and created what we know as the Grand Canyon.

Chael once had to beat the shit out of his own shadow for getting too close. Then his shadow went and kicked Wanderlei Silvas ass out of spite.

Well, Silva was good in that fight. He didn't seem to have stiffed by then. He even said he looked as good as he could. Izzy had so many fights too, he had almost 80 fights in kickboxing before coming to the UFC.... And his fight vs Silva was what, his 12th MMA fight? Kickboxers accumulate a lot, like, a lot of damage too, with the fights being all striking based. No one is 100% of what they could be, no one knows Adesanya when a peak kickboxer either.

Anderson Silva lost because Adesanya was better. MMA evolves, striking evolves, it all revolves with time.
bro...what are you talking about? are you seriously making an apologetic argument for how age does not matter? Anderson Silva wasn't inconveniently past his prime, he had been considered past his prime for a long time and had not won for a long time other than Derek Brunson, which most thought was a bad decision.

Silva had many fights and many surgeries. Israel Adesanya was significantly younger and did not have major operations. Why are we talking about evolution when there is a undeniable, gigantic, variable like Silva being past his prime? Do you think Jake Paul beat Anderson Silva due to evolution as well?

Jake Paul beat Silva on boxing. Izzy did it on MMA. Who's to say that was peak Izzy, either? I mean, do you know what's 80 fights in kickboxing? One of them being KO'd by Pereira's left hook on their second kickboxing match. Generally, when a fighter lost there, they wouldn't have won either way. Adesanya was better and marked an up in skill level form Silva. Silva is better as far as legacy goes. If we put them against each other though, Adesanya was better.

Silva himself said that Alex Poatan helped him to train for Izzy, and that he was in awe at Alex's ability to mimick Izzy's style to a point it'd be just like Izzy lol. Not only that, Silva said even before, when he'd spar a little harder with Poatan, but Silva was the one going harder as he had the fight vs Izzy, that Poatan was just scary. That even when he thought he got in good shots, it seemed like touching Pereira would hurt him instead... And that he'd himself ask to pause the sparring, noticing Alex Pereira is a monster.

Silva also lived together with Khalil Rountree, and was pretty close to him. He'd call Khalil a brother (as well as he calls JJ, a little brother) and Silva had said Khalil's Muay Thai skills and improved takedown is the material for a dominant champion in the makes of LHW. After sometime, when Alex defeated Khalil, Silva wrote:

"It's hard to watch a fight between a brother and a friend. To my friend, Alex, you were just perfect today, if there's close to perfection when fighting, it is you. And to my brother Khalil, you fought so well and gave everything you had in this opportunity that was a dream that I know one day will come true. Best recovery to you"...

Izzy and mainly, Alex Pereira... As great and memorable as Silva was, that Silva can't be a match for them, specially Pereira. The level is another one altogether. Let's say Dominick Reyes is ~ Jiri Prochakza level... Jon Jones at his last LHW days, was slightly above Reyes and Jiri. Alex Pereira had already shown a new level when destroying Jiri like no opponent ever did, in that way, against a very good shape Jiri that was the same as the one who smashed Rakić. Alex Gustaffson in fact, after being beaten by JJ, lost to Anthony Smith and then other fighters that were ranked lower than Jiri and Reyes. Alex fell, sure, but not to an extent big enough that he rot. He was still competitive, but Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos... Then Reyes (who didn't fight him but was dominating evey fighter from when Gus could no longer be competitive)... They were already imo a level above the best Alexander Gustafsson. Gus couldn't keep up with the new era. JJ is more obsessed, and even without the picograms, he studied the new killers like Thiago, Reyes over and over too, to compensate for the rule of "next generation takes the old one" and managed to defeat both those new prospects, albeit he needed to dig deep to win. Later on, after the 3 years, I believe is the moment JJ studied the new generation trends and techniques over and over, horned his skills and when allowed to take picograms, which was not before, and apparently unfairly forbidden as there was admitting that they screwed up top.

If you think Chandler's a cheat, oh boy. Brought the WWE bullshit to the octagon, a mentality that encourages cheating and the crossover crowd lapped it up. Had the highest t levels ever recorded by the UFC post Silva 1. And now he laughingly bemoans never being champ.

One of the better scripted/rehearsed talkers, nothing compared to fellas who can be witty unprepared like Bisping, tho.

Sometimes entertaining fighter even otside of the glorious submission losses. Good enough at his job to fight Silva twice for the title.

Does he still hold the record for getting caught for most forbidden susbtances at the same time? That is something.

How are you defining "one of the best ever"? He's got some solid wins, his best streak being the three wins (vs Dan Miller, Okami and Marquardt) and a few other solid wins (Bisping, Brian Stan).

I think he's in the hall of very good. His wrestling was among the best in the division and his submission defence among the worst for guys in his level.
This

Striking was bad too
