Didn’t follow MMA back when he was fighting but have heard about him over time and via YouTube.

What’s your thoughts on him as a fighter and how would he fare in the current MMA landscape had he been an active fighter in his prime?

He was fearless and smart, back then you had to figure things out on your own, he had a bunch of submissions without ever taking someone down. Look up his video on youtube where he talks through every fight of his career

deadly strikes then deadly ground later.. good

it would do these young whippersnappers some good to get a taste of the patented bas rutten shart machine

very good. He beat the same guy who knocked out cro cop.

He was fucking awesome. Very explosive, really good striking and power and pretty good submissions too. You can watch most of his fights on youtube. He put them on his channel.

One of the biggest early proponents of full rounded games after being submitted a few times in his career. Then became one of the better technically skilled heavyweights of all time without having a true grappling/wrestling background. It wasn't exactly like a "GSP becoming one of the best mma-wrestlers in the world" progression, but he definitely impressed with how much he took in and improved. I believe the consensus was, even with a 21 fight win streak, his career ended early and people thought he was only getting better, as he was a great, efficient striker who really exploded in submission ability.

Good enough to BREAK YOUR ARM

oh sorry, DANG KNEE TO THE HEAD NOW YOUR NOSE IS BROKEN

Edit: you definitely read that in Bas Ruttens voice

His submission did get better would have loved to see him vs ken in 1996

But I think you can train all you want but he will never be as good as ken on ground

Just like ken on feet vs him

I used his stool attack at a bar when I was hit from behind. I fell and instantly grabbed a stool and started hitting the guy with the legs. He couldn't get to me and I made it to my feet and threw the thing at him.

Truly awesome, his fight IQ & killer instinct were off the charts!
And talk about leaving on a high note, he retired riding a 21-0-1 streak!!

You have to consider the level of competition at the time but this does not take away from the man.

if he had a sprawl he would've been the goat. Without wrestling he would be helpless today though.
