I mean the talent pool was pretty shallow back then and his only notable fights were against Randleman and the Shamrock brothers, so how good was he really?

How would anyone know? All we know is how he did in the fights he was in, so fairly good. Why ask questions that you know there aren't answers to?

bas had some mean punches and kicks. his ground game was not too bad. would've loved to see bas fight a little later in the mma scene but for his time, he was a top notch striker with decent submissions.

He was one of the most rounded fighters in the world after he developed his grappling skills. Bas was good.

What the fuck?

At some point of his career his ground game became really good but his wrestling always sucked.

He also fought Funaki, Suzuki, Mezger, etc. He was one of if not the best strikers of his day and he developed a quality ground game just by teaching himself pretty much. His only losses were early in his career due to grappling deficiencies but once he became a competent grappler he was unstoppable. I know his win over Randleman is a contentious one but keep in mind the judging system was different then and he was at a considerable size disadvantage. He was a great fighter, one of the top 5 MMA fighters pre-2000s.

bas rutten is so damn explosive with his kick and punches , he has crazy speed and explosiveness for a heavyweight. he is as fast as a middleweight. Only problem is most of his career he was doing pankration and other organisations where you can only slap with your hands ( forbidden to punch with fists ) so he couldn't really show of his technique to the full extent.

Bass is just like hector lombar, carlos condit, silva etc. when you fight them you just know you will get fucked up , even if you win you absorbed tremendous damage. a hard fight for everyone .

In my opinion, Bas was one of the most well-rounded and dangerous fighters ever. He started out as a kickboxer, but learned submissions rather quickly and was able to become King of Pancrase. He was a great student of the game and a very cerebral fighter. He had wicked leg kicks, high kicks and liver strikes. His weakness was wrestling, but he did improve his TD defense. It's a shame we never saw Bas get into shootouts with guys like Liddell, Wandy, and Fedor. After becoming the UFC HW champ, I heard that Bas wanted to drop weight and go down (back to his natural weight) to fight Frank Shamrock for the 200lb. title but Frank retired. As a Frank Shamrock fan, I think Bas would have beaten him.

He is as good as 8 Bispings.

I would say if you consider how easily he picked up grappling and how deadly of a striker he was, and how he moved for his size, he is easily legendary status.

I think he's actually a P4P great, but it's hard to argue because in his era there weren't many great fighters to really prove it with

He used to knock motherfuckers out with Stockton slaps when he was in Pancrase.

Go to fight finder. Search for Masakatsu Funaki.

Helped get the sport to where it is today for sure, he developed some fighting techniques and training techniques that are still used today as well as being a generally awesome dude. Check out some old kickboxing from his time some of the best came from that time period. He's also a freaking fight encyclopedia always enjoy listening to him.
