How far Valerie Loureda will go

Countless? Exactly how many female MMA fighters have had their 2nd pro fight ever in Madison Square Garden? Seriously? This girl just got thrust into the big leagues over night. MSG, a New York crowd, that's pressure right there. BTW, she did pretty good, didn't she?
It was like a 14 fight card, the whole prelims (minus Pico fight) was filled with cans, considering it was the MSG it felt weird.

Ever watched a boxing event? Forgettable prelims are the norm for MSG events.

Probably im more of a casual when it comes to boxing as i dont put the effort to look where to watch prelims, they dont show up those on TV here, only main cards and some times only top 3 fights or so, having said that, i think MSG deserved a bit better from them, just my opinion, i have seen boxing fights where the arena is basically empty, so i guess they do can fights just the same, but the level here was something else imho.

I have to keep repeating this, MSG is not the sacred cow people are making it out to be.

I wouldnt call it sacred or anything, it just a big stage...not a random Casino like Bellator used to do fights in.

And? It was a prelim fight. I can’t name a single prelim from UFc’s Last event at MSG.

This girls ass alone will compel her to stardom if she can keep stringing wins together (even if it's against some of the lowest tier opposition). Seriously. She's a total dime, fights in a mostly crowd pleasing style, and decided to wear white shorts last night.

If she gets to 10-0 (and again, carefully selected opponents) she'll definitely be some kinda star.

Roxy vs. "I don't even know who she is, and I commentate for the UFC" (Joe Rogan voice)

So I guess you're half right, if it weren't for Roxy I wouldn't remember any fights either.

I think Coker approaches WMMA in a fairly intelligent manner. Arguably moreso than the UFC, and certainly more than Invicta.

Bellator doesn't have the money to go toe-to-toe with the UFC, so they take 2 kinds of female fighters (there is occasional overlap, but not much);

1. Legitimately good, top fighters. Julia Budd. Ilima Lei-MacFarlane. Juliana Velasquez. These fighters put on exciting matches in addition to being legitimately among the best in the world in their weight-class.

2. Attractive fighters. Valerie Loureda. Heather Hardy. They lack fighting skills but look sexy.

What you don't want is fighters who are generally better than those in group 2. but worse in group 1. and aren't attractive.

Nothing turns people off WMMA quicker than boring point-fights between two fighters who are somewhat competent, but nowhere near good or the best in their weight-class, and unattractive. They either want good fights between the best or at least entertaining slopfests between a couple of hot chicks.

Hardy vs. Turner from last night and even Loureda's match are great examples. Did those two fights suck from a skills standpoint? Yeah, absolutely. Total garbage.

Was I entertained more than, oh...Angela Hill vs. Jodie Esquibel from a few weeks ago? Hell yeah.

And don't give me the "but it should be a meritocracy!" bullshit. MMA hasn't been anything remotely resembling a meritocracy since the UFC CUT #1 contender Matt Lindland in 2005 to protect their golden boy champion Rich Franklin.

And considering that a random 2-2 male journeyman would beat virtually every female fighter in the world in his weight-class, and yet people will pay to watch the inferior female combatant over him, WMMA doesn't function remotely as a meritocracy either, never has, and never will.

Maybe folk should go on boxrec and check out a few old cards before they get too upset about novices and cans on the "big stage"

Yeah, it's enjoyable as both sport and entertainment. Loureda's only 21 with strong potential. She'll benefit from tightening her stance, cutting off the angles to reduce the circling. She can work on it, along with toning down the rhetoric. Her opponent was game - fun fight last night. The rest of the card was entertaining as well!

Well said, but it's unfortunate that there are people who want to deny such things

The same people whining and posting incessantly about Loureda couldn't care less about Rena vs. VanZandt on the same card, a far more significant fight between two young, skilled combatants. In the process, they completely undermine their own point.

Wood.
