Does Ricardo Arona have the BJJ skills as someone like Maia or Jacare??? I know he is like undefeated in abu dhabi. Please discuss.

Arona is takedown and top control guy.

He might win a point victory over the two other guys but they are far more versatile than him.

I always seen Arona`s BJJ more like Power Jiu-Jitsu.

He will take you down, muscle his way into your guard or defense and control you from top position. I don`t think he`s versatile or flashy like Maia or Jacare but he does have a very fundamental and basic game.

I guess will see how he does this year in adcc. I heard he got invited, lets see how he competes against the best grapplers today.

I believe Arona will still do well. While I don't think he will win by any flashy submissions, he is still what he is.. a powerful grappler with good to great take downs for a BJJ guy. He will most likely win by points after a very slow paced match, but I think he can win and even the Absolute.

This year will very very exciting to see how everything plays out with all the MMA fighters competing and the likes of some good wrestlers like Askren along with names you see at every ADCC and Worlds.

Arona would probably have become a great wrestler if he had grown up in the US. I agree with what has been said so far - he is a great controller but not that much of a submission finisher. He has good submissions but somehow he doesn't seem to fit them into his game.

Never been impressed with Aronas Jitsu. Its all power and no technique. His game is a lot like Monsons. No where near as good as the guys mentioned. I mean, look at the Quinton slam. A blue belt should know tha you give up the triangle if your lifted up. Arona actually sat up onto Quintons head, it looked like a worked WWF move, like a powerbomb.

You don't have to be impressed. He's a 2x ADCC champ at his weight, an absolute champ, and is undefeated in that event. When you've got all that hardware, who gives a shit who you impress.

i disagree. arona's jiu jitsu is not like monson's. If anything, arona's jiu jitsu is old school. He doesn't go for anything unless his oppoent gives him an opening. Ie is the opposite of Jacare.

To keep it in the MMA context - watch him pass guard on Overeem and control the hell out of him or watch his takedowns against Wanderlei... It is power with technique.

You just described a good wrestler. Randleman, Coleman, Kerr

Passing Overeems guard is no big deal

Overeem is a pretty good grappler and I'm thinking more about the way he did it than the fact that he did it.

Also, as I said earlier, Arona is a controller and I'm sure he would have been a great wrestler instead if he was born in the US.

you don't get any more cereal credentials than 2x ADCC champ (including 1 at openweight) without having a point scored on you. in terms of sub's, he's not in that same class. he doesn't have to be though.

Arona is the God of ADCC. His record speaks for its self. Your insulting all the great grapplers he's smashed with your nonsense. If his technique sucked so bad then why the hell has he never even had a point scored on him in no-gi?

shit if he'd grown up in the US he'd have been an NCAA multiple time champ, he's got SUCH good takedowns and he's a BJJ guy. Of course his sweeps would suck and he might be fat lol.
