How do your trainers hold the mitts??

I've come across two basic methods... that being:
1. the jab, cross onto the one mitt... that is from an orthodox stance jab and cross, both onto the trainers right mitt
2. or, alternatively the jab onto one mitt, then cross onto the other... ie jab to the trainers left mitt, then cross to the trainers right mitt...
Now i was wondering what you guys/girls do, and any arguments for or aginst that..
the only one i've heard of, is that method '1' is a more realistic size of a human head..
Any thoughts or opinions??
 
usually 2 mitts, but they are held pretty close together. not really sure why its 2 mitts as opposed 2 one, so i guess i cant really help.
 
I personally like the two mitt method because it makes you have to zero into one target and then quickly zero into the next target. Hence, more accuracy work. But I don't think the difference is that great. So whatever you want to do. Hope this helps.
 
i think alternating mitts also helps you focus on each individual punch, instead of just letting go without thinking about it.
 
You should use the mitts and try some TKD Drills, but try and apply a Thai style to it, this helps great on cardio, and you will be able to throw a kick like it's nothing. Remember you can't get faster, we are only born with so many fast twitch fibers, but with repetitive practice techniques become easier to throw. It is all about reaction time not speed, it is very difficult to make yourself faster, but it is easy to make techniques easier to throw.

If 1-2 only, then two mits.

If 1-2 followed by a hook, then jab-cross on one mit, hook on the other.

Yes we can get faster. Do you honestly think Ben Jonson and Carl Lewis were born like that :rolleyes:

Speed is easily trained, but reaction time is only possible to improve a little, on the other hand a little better reaction makes quite a big different in a fight
 
we can develop more fast twitch muscle fibers. We can also lose them and have fewer if we don't use them

actually you cant develope more fast twitch muscle fibers. we have a finite number of them and we cant get more. we can make them bigger and more efficient... but we will not get more.

there are two types of fast twitch muscle fibers. 1= fast glycolytic, IIb fibers..... these are the "white"ones that are for strength/power. we can never get more of these and they will never change.

2= fast oxidative glycolytic, IIa.... these are kind of half slow twitch fibers that are for intermittet sports. we can train these to be more glycolytic but they will always be slower.

speed gains are actually quite minimal... our bodies dont get that much quicker. i have an article about speed training somewhere but i cant find it.... it has the exact percentage of speed that a human can gain from training. speed gains come much more from biomechanical improvements than from physiological ones.
