...live now where close to a gym? I live 2 hours from Houston and 3 hours from Dallas. Next year I will be going to UT in San Antonio or the one in Dallas so I can train there after classes.

My friend and I love to grapple, most are bigger and stronger than me but the little I know kind of evens things out.

Can anyone recomend some instructional dvds? I don't want one that just focuses on bjj but also has some judo or throws, or maybe some freestyle wresteing seeing as how I usually end up on the bottom

by the way no mats just grass but we are pitching in to mat my entire spare room.

Thanks alot for any advice you can give me.

Well first it is BEST to know someone who has experience in SOME form of grappling. It si tough to guage progress if everyone is green.

BUT if you have a buddy thats a brown belt in Judo for example or a wrestler you will be able to find out if what you are doing is working.

But yes, you can learn from DVD's and step by step instructions.

True. I live to far away to go to a gym on a daily bases but I would go to seminars around Texas. I have family in dallas, austin, houston, and san antonio so going there for a weekend once a month or so won't hurt. I'm sure there is a gracie school somewhere around there. also the machados have schools in texas.

which dvds are actually good though?

Didnt read most of it have no time right now. Do what i did, find people around your area that are looking for the same thing, hook your garage up! or whatever room you can.

Jiu Jitsu is in a whole new level now. Back then people didnt have access to BJJ but now there are books, videos etc... All you have to do is FIND people to train with. Dont block yourself by believing that an academy is the only way to train.

Check out Eric Paulson's Seminar dvd . It covers Boxing drills , Thai drills , Wrestling takedowns (the basics along with setups), sidecontrol , the mount , all kinds of submissions and leg locks .this is just to name a few . It's a good mix of drills , techniques and submissions .

Me too, that would be Austin. And we have two BBs where I live, Vandry (Carlos Machado BB) and Phil Cardella (Relson Gracie BB). There are other schools with lower ranked instructors in Round Rock, Georgetown, Sam Marcus and San Antonio. Where do you live in Texas?

Lufkin Texas. Small town with only mcdojos. I was looking online and there was actualy a bjj club that met every tuesday and thursday in my small town. the instructor moved to houston to take over a larger gym.

Currently there are 6 of us that meet on a regular basis. The spare den is really huge so we could have two groups rolling.

Oh yeah mats are really fucking expensive. Dvds are also.

Sometimes schools will have auctiosn or sales where they sell used utility mats or sometimes even wrestling mats. Utility mats are not the greatest thing in the world to train on because they are iMO too soft and slippery, but if you are only going to need to do so for a year or so, and are only in the beginning stage anyway they might not be a bad idea. Might also want to check used sports equipment stores.

yep my bro bought a 10x10 wrestling mat and it was used. Didnt pay alot for it either...it was years ago but it is still there and works well.

He got it online, search google for used wrestling mats and see what you get.

Even got to pick the color.

Youtube, Google Videos, lockflow.com, bjj.org and so on have a huge number of vids you can use to your advantage.

God is big joey the guy thats "fighting" the dummy? I think ill look online for some videos before spending big bucks as seeing we really need mats. Grass itches and marble floors hurt...really bad.

Just a quick question to anyone who has trained on there own, how bad did you get schooled after going to an actual gym. I know a year or grappling with friend will not make me beat a blue belt or anything but did it atleast help you out in the fact that you knew about the guards, armbars, and leglocks. I think this would give me some advantage to where atleast I would know the lingo and have some idea of what is expected.

Thanks for the replies and I can't wait to move so I can get some training from an actual pracisioner.

I'd recommend in addition to the training you're doing with friends you could possibly carpool to Houston 2-3 times a week, or atleast a few times a month. If you have people to split the gas and driving time 2 hours really isn't all that far of a drive.

full time studen't and worker. Only have time on weekends. I'll have to see when I can go to a seminar or attend classes on a saturday.
