Saku is probably my fave all time. However, one of the hardest things to do as a fan is separate fact from nostalgia. Fedor is also my other fave, but I think a prime DC beats him.

IF Saku was around, he would probably fight WW or maybe even LW with similar sized guys like Lee and Khabob. Could he have beat Khabib or Douglas Lima? I don't think so. Could he have even taken down MVP and subbed him? Dicey, dicey!

And I think that is where I diverge from many long term fans as I think the game has greatly increased from those days. A guy like Vitor was considered "the Michael Jordan of BJJ" but gets mauled by modern white belts on the ground like Jones did. It hurts me to even say it, as I don't think a guy like MVP is super elite in today's MMA world, but the game has changed so much. I mean, would Gene Tunney even be able to compete with someone like Canelo today? I do not think so.

Vitor gets subbed by white belts. I mean if Jon Jones could do it anyone could do it right?

What skills does UFC HW bring to the table that was not there over a decade ago? Go back and watch some HW fights, the division was far deeper back then. The only thing that changed is the fact that nowadays old men who can barely move are still ranked in the top 5.

He was so special. He really was. And then vanderlei really did end it. Sakuraba beat vitor Belfort! And almost beat Igor! Silva just had his number.

At the time he was the #1. Absolute legend. But the game has evolved. He would be slaughtered by todays top fighters.

Saku was always a fav of mine...crazy heart, insane tolerance to pain and usually undersized against opponents, having to fight super-juiced up guys like Wand, Arona (would love to have seen how those guys would have fared against Sak natty)
    pure legend

Daley is a legit striker tho and a modern martial artist, and, he still lost - if Daley did not late shot Koscheck, he very well may have fought for the UFC strap. I mean, just look at how closely matched Saku and Royce were and then what happened to Royce when he fought Hughes, who would probably not even be top 5 in Bellator. The game has simply moved on, and as an old fan that used to ride my bike to rent single digit numbered UFC's on Blockbuster VHS as they came out and pull all nighters to watch Pride live and go to work with no sleep, I hate saying that. Like I said, it pains me to even say a guy like MVP would probably beat Saku, but I think if the bout was announced tomorrow, MVP would be favored.

No man, he would not be favoured except by you, much less in a square ring
Did you actually see MVP when he is forced to grapple?

Saku beat Royce and went to gave Igor Vovchanchyn a very tough fight right after, those single legs he was hitting on Igor, as he did on many others, there is no reason at all to believe MVP has the ability to stop it

Yeah I think Sakuraba could have single-legged MVP pretty damn easily actually.

He was a natural WW. Impossible to say how he would take to the modern training environment of MMA, if he entered the sport today. But in his prime he was one of the best P4P fighters, alongside Bas and Frank (and shout out to Igor).
