How do you pay for expensive dental work out of pocket?

Someone I know needs a few things done that total up to $9,000. Paying it all up front is not an option. Anyone know of a way around this? Has anyone been in a similar position?

Get it done in Thailand for a fraction of the cost and have a nice vacation to boot. Doctors of dentistry trained in the USA.

^ Listen to this guy. My mate got a whole brand spanking new set for $4k. You could never tell they're fake.

If all this murderous shit with the Cartel wasn't going down, I would say go to Mexico. Few years ago physicians from here in the States would go down to Mexico and do dental and medical work for cheap. I had a friend who was a bit sketchy about going down there, but couldn't afford the out of pocket expense that comes with our health care. He ended up going south of the border and paid a fraction of what it would have cost him up here. 5 years later and he has no complications at all.

Maybe see how much they would charge at a dental school

That's what I was wondering. Although I don't think this person would go down there anyway, Mexican dental work doesn't exactly have the best reputation.

It's possible that in the last five years it has declined but when my buddy got it done he said everything went smooth. Like I said, he hasn't had any issue since having the work done.

dental work in mexico is actually notoriously good and affordable, 3-5 years ago no way in hell would anyone go down there, today not an issue no more warring cartels its as safe as ever.

Had 2 get orthodontic work 2nd time in my life. It was $2500. Fortunately, I had some savings. My dental insurance does not cover it.

I'm fairly sure most dental offices offer payment plans. I've had to foot only a thousand or so at a time (I use my HSA) - $9k is nuts.

Have your buddy go to the local church and ask if they will help

They often will

He maybe frying fish for Lent, but his teeth will be fixed

Most places will work with you and split them into monthly payments when you have a bill that high.

Dental insurance is one of those things that really is worth paying for. I pay about $6 a month and recently had wisdom teeth pulled, a root canal and other work. Without insurance, I was looking at 6k. With insurance, I paid $800.

in the usa this is a total scam and the interest rate will have him pay at least quadruple what he should be...

$6 a month is ridiculously low. Make no mistake about it - more people lose money on dental insurance than benefit. It comes in handy for the big ticket items though.

Probably. I'm sure they get burnt a lot on people not paying and they have to make up for it. I would never finance dental work.

Can you recommend an insurance company?

I used to go to Palomas.

fillings 20 bucks
pulled tooth 20 bucks
braces for a grand

It was nicer than the offices here. That was ten years ago though. They have since assassinated the mayor for challenging the cartels, so I haven't been back.
