    - Was part of the older gen of lightweights
    - never trained as hard as he should have when he was in his prime
    - took a bunch of beatings and got old.

    - no motivation lol

Not everyone stays in their prime until their mid-30s or late 30s. BJ Penn had an extensive career, lots of wars and there's lots of other factors like genetics, training, drug consumption, mental issues, etc.
NFL players often retire in their early 30s because they already feel the effects and results of not being in your real physical prime anymore. MMA is just more "forgiving" because the athletes aren't that high-level (that's also why the lower-tier athletes in the bigger divisions can fight longer than the (better athletes) smaller ones, look at Oleynik for example.)

Barao is another example. People act like he got USADA'd but the guy just had a long ass career and there's also a mental aspect to it. Some people get better when they lose the belt, some crumble. The guy also never made a dime, dude was probably training in some garage and still washing his clothes in the bathtub when EPOshaw took him out.

Pretty simply this...the part about taking beatings emphasized, against bigger guys who were elite.

He was never a dedicated life-long athlete. He trained hard for a couple of years but generally preferred to get high and eat burritos and rely on his natural talents to carry him through fights. That worked OK in his 20s but once he hit 30 that didn't fly anymore and it was too late for him to change.

    People will say:

    - CTE
    - Lack of motivation
    - GOAT that never reached his potential
    - Mental issues

    I would say:

    - He was never that good
    - He was always a POS but he could channel that through fighting. Now he is a bum and not even Dana will give him fights so he is fighting random people.
    - He is a beta cuckhold <Lmaoo>

GSP ended the prime of BJ Penn by giving him like 5 concussions during their rematch.

Georges gave some guys prolonged beatings, which absolutely can be worse than a quick KO.

Some combination of personality and mental health.

He was always a guy whose potential was greater than his performance...which is scary when you think about how great some of his performances were.

But he'd always show up to some fights out of shape, or in a bad frame of mind. Of course, when he was focused he was a stone cold killer.

Side effects of antibiotics was another aspect.

He took some kind of fluoroquinalone which can mess up your connective tissue.
