I've been doing MT at the same gym for about 3 years. I'd like to think I'm decent. The coaches don't really correct as many glaring defects in my game when I first started. The problem I'm having is I don't really have anyone at my level during class anymore. Last week I worked with a new guy every day of the week. Add on to that that I'm a HW(6'1" 250lbs) and most of the people I work with are 190lbs at the most.

I'm thinking about switching gyms, but I don't want to get stuck in the same trap of being a teachers assistant, and having to pay for the privilege. What are some things I should look for in a gym that caters to, or at least has an advanced portion of students?

A trainer with good credentials is a solid start. You'll normally find this out by a quick google search. See what fighters they have there, if they're successful, any champions etc. If their gym has a focus on fighting rather than just training and fitness. To be honest, if you've been training in Muay Thai for 3 years you should already know where the good gyms and bag gyms are from going to fight shows.

I wish we had MT fight shows. The closest thing we have here is MMA shows at the casinos. We do gym smokers sometimes but the guys that fight are all >160lbs.

Unless someone is keeping it a secret like the Kumate...
