How crucial is runnin to a boxer's conditioning?

Already had to give up football because I can't run long distances anymore without my knee killing me. My achilles tendon is too short causing my knee to overstretch. I can get the tendon extended with surgery but I heard the recovery can be up to 9 months and I could not stand not exercising for 9 months.

I can jump,swim and cycle just fine. Right now I'm mostly riding my bike to stay in shape
 
You sound really young. 14 or 15 maybe?

9 months is nothing if you're looking at 20 more years of running from getting surgery.

I'm 19, so no I'm not really young anymore.

The reason I sound so young is probably because English isn't my first language.
 
It's not an English problem... it's a youth problem: wanting everything fast and now.

No disrespect intended. At 37, 9 months is nothing. It's perspective.

You can box without running. You can work your technique. You can do endless hours of mirror work. Perhaps, you can jump 5 to 10 rounds of rope per day with your issue. Perhaps you can do sprint work on a stationery bike.

The long distance running you're referring to is an old-school training method for boxers. Here's a great thread that details cardio work:

By the time you double your age, you won't be a "boxer" anymore. You may "box", but you'll have completely different desires in life.

It's not only not being able to exercise for 9 months but also having to walk on crutches for some months and the heavy rehabilitation that comes with it. I'm also afraid it will get in the way of my study.

I know you are right but it's just hard for me to accept being both physically and socially crippled for 9 months
 
Get the surgery.. and concentrate on school work. Life is easier when you are healthy and have money.
