He’s got wins over the ghosts of Diego Sanchez and Carlos Condit

and then he’s got wins over RDA and Magny.

I would rate the last two, and he’s looked pretty good on the mat against those two not gonna lie.

But I’m just not buying that he’s a top fighter. I think he’s going to get finished by Luque like he usually does in his losses.

He could control RDA on the ground, but got nothing offensive going for him. Chiesa looked pretty slow and zombie-like standing, but I don’t know how RDA couldn’t capitalize enough there…

He’s pretty much a nightmare match up for Condit these days and… Yeah, LW sized old man Diego isn’t a good win at WW for anyone.

Magny is a decent win, he’s not great anywhere but will work hard and push you.

I expect Luque to have heavy offense and make Chiesa reach for takedowns/clinch so it becomes somewhat easier for Luque to defend. Hopefully Luque via finish

The RDA win was impressive, but the fight wasnt. Chiesa was subbed by Pettis a couple of years ago. RDA destroyed Pettis for five rounds.

I think it's even possible that Luque rocks him and then chokes him out.

Pettis and Masvidal beat Chiesa similarly, they hurt Chiesa on the feet and he panic shoots for a TD and eventually gets choked out.

Credible enough to earn him a fight with Luque :)

WW would be great if the top guys started fighting each other instead of getting TS by beating old fighters or just by waiting around.

So it makes sense why he made a run at welterweight. Welterweight has always been the best division for wrestling/grappling. You can look no further than the champions historically, Hughes, GSP, Hendricks, Woodley, Usman, very strong wrestling backgrounds. And this is further reinforced by non-UFC promotions, but I digress. Basically, all the riding or top positions in this division are extremely dominant and extremely easy to maintain. It's unlike the lower divisions where you see fighters maybe even doing the correct moves, but their opponents can still stand up or turn and frame them. And it's unlike say heavyweight of course, where fighter cardio is much worse and also one-punch finishing power is also much higher. We're seeing a lot of wrestlers percolate at FW and LW but that, I think, has more to do with fighter signings and recruitment than anything else. So in essence Chiesa moved to the best division for his style of fighting.

In my opinion Chiesa is not an elite wrestler. He's very committed to it, and he's worse at everything else. But he doesn't have great athleticism, his transitions are fine they're not amazing. His jiu jitsu is not a question mark. He can be submitted if say Luque rocks him and then follows up with a sub but that's not about someone's jiu jitsu it's just what happens when someone loses their wits. If the fight goes to the ground in a controlled manner, he'll have a dominant or neutral position so the threat of the sub will not be there. I don't really see either fighter getting a sub, if Chiesa wins he will just lay on Luque for 15 minutes.

This will be the smell test in a division that lacks depth. Flip side of coin , Luque needs to win impressively. They need a fresh contender.

You make a good point it is a little overrated imo.

I pretty sure he’s under the impression he gets a TS with a W as well. I’d say even with a W he’s still at least another fight if not 2 away from a TS.

Plus the divisions top 3-5 is a mess right now

RDA and Magny are good wins. But RDA has struggled with bigger, stronger grapplers many times. Magny is an all around guy that’s not quite elite. Not enough to suggest he’s a legitimate title contender, but a win over Luque would be pretty big.

RDA and Magny are decent wins but they weren’t overly impressive.

he might be able to Lay and pray Luque, although hopefully not. Chiesa would get dominated by Leon, Colby, or Usman.

The short answer is, we'll know more in 3 days.

RDA was impressive. Luque will really prove - or disprove - it as a run.

I wouldn't wager on this bout.

Fun fact, if Luque Brabo chokes Chiesa he will have most in UFC history. He is tied with Ferguson right now.

Another weird fact, Chiesas career in the last 8 years has played out like this. 1 loss, 2 wins, 1 loss, 3 wins, 1 loss, 4 wins, and then the Luque fight. If the pattern continues then Luque wins.

Bet the family savings on Luque
