Since most of us train and at least consider the possibility of self def; most people say that training makes them feel more confident in regards to handling themselves in a self defense situation.

Alot of this is based on the assumption most guys can't really strike and/or more importantly grapple; which give alot of people a sense of security cus it balances out any percceived adv someone has in regards to size/strength/exp/speed/exp.

My question is do u feel u would be as confident if u had to fight or def against another martial artist or trained person; ie karate/wrestler/judoka/bjj/muay thai/

i ask because there have been instances where i almost had to or actually had to fight a trained person before; so i was interested in ur opinions/etc.

devante I actually had this convo with my bro while discussing his and our other siblings results in wrestling comps...
For the most part he agreed that the percieved skill of the opponent influenced his game....
In other words when he faced a wrestler known to already be a champion he wrestled differntly than when he faced an unknown opponent or an opponent he felt he would beat.
His style aws based on a patient upper body game and counter to takedown attempts however when facing a "great" opponent he would immediately shoot for the single or double and force the action.
now there have been instances where he faced an unkonw wrestler or one who wasnt proven yet to be 'great" and the results were differnt. He wrestled his style and did very well..not always a win mind you but usually very close competitive matches...

I guess what I am getting at is that its ok to have a healthy respect for any opponent and its ok to modify your gameplan against particular opponents but in the end your game is your game and you end the way you train will reflect the most likely way you will win an actual competition.

With ANY martial artist even ghey Tae Kwon Do (sorry for hatin) you have a chance of getting seriously hurt if you slip. I would imagine that i would be mentally preparing myself in the heat of the moment, but if the fight is inevitable you have no choice but to be a man and fight.

I think I would feel more confident in a street fight than a controled environment. Everytime I am in class I worry about hurting myself or others. To many times I go light and then just get reversed becasue I was not doing what I should have been doing.

In tournaments I feel that I waste time working for points. There are rules to confine me in my activities.

In real life .. there are no rules. Also the fact that lies in the backof your head whether you are wining or loosing is ... If I don't pull this out worse will happen to my kids and wife.

There is a lot of motivation in saving the life of your loved ones. There is also a lot of motivation in knowing that you can't tap out.

but do realize it is a two way street. If he is skilled he can bite, brake fingers, gouge eyes, and brake teeth.

I still wouildn't wanna get in a fight and probably never will. I don't wanna find out if what I learn would help in self-defense since that's not why I am doing BJJ anymore. I also don't wanna find out how getting shot or stabbed feels like.

THERE have been people i have known or been in confrontations w/and later on found out they had trained something or a couple'a things; an i kept thinking wow if we would have fought there is a good chance that dude would have handed me my ass.

example- this one guy i almost got into a fight w/trying to keep one of my friends from fighting; everything ended up getting calmed down, but later on i found out this dude trained at a place i used to train at. He was a bjj bluebelt and did muay thai had 15 fight, and was 15-1 (w/13kos). Now i have gone w/some fairly adept guys in sparring and in actual fights; but after seeing his groundgame and how crisp/sharp/fast his muay thai was, i was thinking he would have KILLED ME.

If i had to i would have and still would fight him; but it was obvious this cat was a class above me in regards to tech/physical ability.

but i have seen alot of trained guys backdown or be hesitant WHEN they find out someone is trained at all or has comparable skillset.. Any other time they would be quick to fight.. but knowing they aren't facing some untrained scrub changes their while approach..and willingness to fight.

nothin worse when u go for something and the guy does not just get out of it; but does it w/a tech escape or u fight someone and they block and counter w/hard clean sharp strikes or u take them down and they spin into an armbar.

its like what the fuck...oh shit this cat knows this too...this is gonna be alot tougher than i thought.

Tell David Loiseau or that one Turkish dude that TKD is gay. There are some people who can translate their TKD backrounds successfully into MMA. Of course, the good comes with the bad. There is that infamous clip of the TKD dude getting his back broken in a MMA match. TKD has a bad reputation for being flashy and without any use in a fight, but contrary to popular belief, some fighters can put their TKD skills to good use in MMA.

regardless of their training, you determine the result in your head.

for example, my brother did jjj wrasslin and aikido, he came into the gym and basically tooled me on the mat. His presence basically destroyed my mind set and my game. He's my older brother by 10 years.

two days later we were rolling in my basement... and I was tooling him.

have faith in your abilities and do your own thing. it doesnt matter if hes been rolling for a week or 100 years. winning or losing is out of your hands, you can only control your performance. if you perform optimally and dont win , then its a learning experience. if you do win , you win.

im pretty confident about fighting any opponent no rules. in any given rule set im not as confident.

i think the only thing i worry about is strikes
its the old boxer vs grappler thing
will i get knocked the fuck out before i can grap hold of the guy
also how useful is bjj in a packed club or outside a club where you can eat a foot from the guys buddies

theres alot to be said for a good clean knockout punch.

you have to be confident or you will lose but at the same time you must realize that this person can put you in danger and you have to be on your best game and stay in good positions

Not to sound offensive but a lot of you guys sound like a bunch of sissies. This is what BJJ Tourny's, MT Boxing matches and finally MMA fights are for. To test to see how much of your technique you can translate in a real environment. Get out there and compete! It's a lot better to loose a Boxing Match or a BJJ Fight than it is to loose in the street!

You've already thought too much about it. Don't think about it.

yeah on bbelts higher than me, when i have tha confident kinda mentality i do ALOT better. whe nyou think your ognna looes , you are most likely goign ot loose. you have to try to win. it makes a BIG differnence to me at least

no problem,

if I had to face a higher belt in BJJ than me in the street, no problem.
because I got enough BJJ to understand what he is gonna do and lets hope he has enough
knowledge of what I'm gonna do to him! HEHEHEHE

for example,

I LOVE that fight when Carlao entered the UFC. Carlos Barretto, Carlson Gracie team extraordinaire and Vale Tudo
expert vs UFC veteran Dave Beneteau.

In the beginning Carlao gets him down, takes his back, text book BJJ goes for the RNC, and Dave defends and
SURVIVES!!!

it was like you just did your BEST move on me and I got out, NOW the WAR is on!!!! Psychologically Dave had
an advantage now.

It was GREAT.

Dave ended up winning this war, and it wasn't because of his technical skills I tell you.
