How come we don't see more BJJ style of fighters like Arona, Jacare and Filho?

I could be wrong and probably this is a style of BJJ that is only in my mind... but don't you have the same feeling that we no longer see this style of fighters? We get to see a very good techinical elite BJJ fighters like Maia, Werdum and of that type but not the athletic and strong BJJ fighters that can actually grapple everywhere, put high pressure, and excellent takedowns, trips and throws.

We have strong grapplers like Khabib but his ultimate goal is not the submission, he's a Sambo/Judo/Wrestler fighter which goal is to control the opponents on the ground, he doesn't have that BJJ mindset whereas Jacare, Arona and Filho can outwrestle, put a lot of pressure but are always looking for the submission.

They can't apply those skills against 'high level' opponents.

Arona got like 3 sub wins in his career, wouldn't call him a bjj based fighter tbh.

Werdum is less of a grappler nowadays, striking gettin' pretty good. Clinch game strong too.

Super strong life-long grapplers typically have horrid standup, and if they cant get the fight on the canvas its an ugly ugly deal.

Because RIP Carlson Gracie Team/ BTT/Team Nogueira :^(

BJJ is judo's newaza

And Arona is more wrestling base then BJJ.

Arona was the rare LnP BJJ Guy

Powerful, sure

Because it's 2018 and BJJ champs transition to MMA faster than ever before. Becoming well rounded instead of a 5 time BJJ champ.

USADA did a number on those guys.

Ricardo Arona with USADA? Impossible.

Edit; I still think it's possible (more than Maia but not as much as Arona) if you have a guy who has been beasting the weights since they were 12 or 13 but much more rare.

Guys like Jacare and Arona were world champs in the grappling world. They are super high level.

UFC needs to quit being cheap and signing WMMA fighters with 3-2 records and instead invest in and develop BJJ world champs and other elite combat sports athletes.

Look how Jacare, Arona, Maia and Werdum reached the top of MMA. Same with Romero and DC who crossed over even later.

These are the real A Level Athletes that MMA needs. Not football and basketball players with zero martial arts experience that sherdoggers talk about.

UFC needs Rico Verhoeven(elite kickboxer), Kyle Snyder(elite wrestler) and Buchecha(elite BJJ) and Gary Tonon and Gordan Ryan (elite grapplers and leg lock masters). It would take a few years to round out their game but they could be elite in MMA one day like Werdum, Jacare, DC and Romero did.

I do love the signing of Saki. I just hope he is not too old and worn out.

And I do think Khabib looks for subs. He just also has that extra weapon of brutal GNP to set it up. It is so brutal so it would be foolish not to use it.

This. Ricardo Arona was actually pretty boring

I like how you say this like it's some kind of revelation, Arona got more shit for being boring than GSP + Fitch combined. :D

Cause a lot of people usually ask about his return every few months and then they look at him and his record and think he must be hot shit when indeed he was boring.

Paul Harris?

Also most of the time they’ll get dominated by good wrestler

Tonon is making his mma debut shortly, in One. Hopefully he gets picked up by the UFC or Bellator (and gets paid $$) if he transitions well.
