Have any of you ever had a relatively small issue end up costing you a significant amount of money?

Apparently, my drivers side windshield wiper blade broke - there are normally three metal rods insulated by rubber, but in my case, two of the metal rods became exposed and started sliding out of the casing. Since it was raining today, I had my wipers on (I didn't know it was broken) and I heard a scraping sound with each swipe.

When I got out of the car, I noticed that the metal rod from the wiper had carved through my roof wrap, through the original paint on the car, down to the metal. I was pretty pissed and called up the dealership - the car is an 18' Camaro, so everything was still under warranty.

Long story short, in order to repair the damage, they need me to remove the car wrap at my expense (which originally cost me $2500). I understood where they were coming from, they acknowledged that the wiper malfunctioned, but they can only cover costs to the stock vehicle. My insurance company said that since I never notified them about the wrap, I am shit out of luck.

In the end, I contacted the company that did my wrap, and they offered to repair the damange and re-wrap the car for $2900 - all in all, not a bad deal. Since I am redoing the whole vehicle anyways, I decided to go from matte black/white to matte black/color shift gloss blue. Avery makes a gloss transition wrap that goes from blue to red depending on lighting.

Not my car, but same model/color:

I would normally be alot angrier, but everybody I dealt with was trying to bend over backwards to make the situation right. The dealership (Gateway Chevrolet) was actually really accommodating - just an unfortunate set of circumstances.

Why didn't you buy a white Honda Civic?

Because I don't rock Gino beats hard enough anymore.

Honda CRX hatch back is the car of my youth. Challenger Hell Cat is the car of my near future.

What is the purpose of a car wrap??

lol

Awesome car btw :) And it's going to look cool with that wrap but I would be too afraid of getting tired of it. I'm more of classic colour guy, I actually love beige cars so I might not be the person to give you any advise on this. lol

Largely aesthetic - plus, it helps protect the paint underneath (rock chips/minor scratches etc). I also really like the level of customization you can get with a car wrap - alot of really cool colors, and significantly cheaper than paint. Plus, it is very easy to remove if you don't like it, or have to sell the vehicle.

A few minutes ago, I would have been against the idea of them. But since it is actually practical in a lot of ways, I really can't find anything wrong with it anymore. Paint on a car in this advanced age really doesn't last as well as it should. Why NOT put something over it that keeps it looking nice.

The only complaint remaining is some of the kinds of customers who do it and their really fuccboi ways, but that's not the technology's fault.

2 questions:
  • Can you do clear color?
  • Can you do multiple layers of car wrap? Think like 5-10 layers so you can protect your car like a spaceship video game shield/force field?

1)They do, 3M makes something called clear guard - alot of dealers offer it is an option for vehicles (unlike most other wraps, which are 3rd party)
2) I don't see why not, but I've never applied a wrap myself. I don't know how well multiple layers will stick to one another - They make something called "rugged wraps" which are designed for work trucks, construction equipment etc. that apparently do a better job of protecting against surface damage.

To be, the greatest utility of a wrap is the level of customization. I remember wanting my Camaro in yellow, and they said it would cost another $3500 (from the dealership). A standard yellow wrap is about $1800 - the only reason I am paying more is that the color I ordered is new and in limited supply. There are some companies that can do some really amazing things with wraps:
