His skillset seems to be that of a typical muay thai / karate type fighter.

He has a LHW frame with added pounds, probably cuts very little if anything. He retains speed and power with the additional weight, which is uncommon I'll grant.

Let's just admit a few facts: most HWs are old/burnt out, slow, and/or fat, with little technique.

Derrick Lewis: Fat, has bursts of speed but is mostly slow, very little technique although he has good timing and submission defense.
Volkov: Slow as hell.
Rozenstuik: Good striking technique, little to no MMA technique, was controlled by a shopworn Econoreem. Gane was also much longer than him, kind of a bad matchup size and style-wise for Rozen.
JDS: Burnt out.
Tanner Boser: Take your pick, fat, slow, whatever.

The conclusion is that Gane's wins are pretty overrated.

Gane would have had his hands full with prime DC, Cain, Brock, Cro-cop, Fedor, or JDS. Probably loses to any one of them. Even maybe a prime Mark Hunt would cause him issues.

That's not a hot take, that's laughably wrong.

Do you really think he could contend with the HW top fighters from history that I listed?

Every single one of them would have their way with him. He's just a beneficiary of a division that turned into burnt out stars and fat guys swangin n bangin.

Go to the eye doctor to check your eyes out.

Yes, he could compete with all of them.
