Hooker's corner should have thrown in the towel..

That fight was hard to watch but I think Hooker was still in it up until the start of the 3rd round. They should half thrown the damn towel in after 30 seconds of the 3rd.

Gotta protect the fighter man..wtf

He's trying to one up Rener for sure. There's tough, and there's too tough, you expend all that toughness in one fight, you'll have nothing left for future fights.

People need to learn from Rory vs Robbie, dude is not the same after that fight.

Nah, I have seen some hookers get a worst beating and no ref stop.

arms down, hands on his hips, wincing badly, if the corner won't do it the ref has to. that's two fights in a couple of weeks that clearly should have been stopped while both guys were still standing.

how is a sherdog keyboard warrior who has never fought going to tell a fighter's corner what to do?
you would probably quit after a single leg kick bro

in boxing, the corner would have stepped in after that body kick. that looked painful

i think the corner is more to blame vs the ref

Both of them were fucking terrible. He was not intelligently defending himself in the 3rd. Just gutting it out through an absolute ass kicking.

Cormier was right of course. Champion and coach, he knows when a fighter is done. At that point, only Edson was really capable of fighting.

I have no idea why his head coach Eugene Bareman wasn't in the corner, but it's a shame. The main corner was Karl Webber, who's an old school fighter from New Zealand. A knowledgable grappler, but not the guy you want in your corner, IMO. Dude came up in the NHB days with headbutts etc, he ain't throwing in a towel.

holy shit is hooker tough. but yeah that ref is an idiot, he was still standing but he was pretty much defenseless on his feet.

When have you ever seen a ref stop a fight in that situation in MMA though? I've never ever seen it. He was absorbing strikes and shuffling around. They only stop it if you're shelled up on the ground or against the fence and getting flurried on.

So, the only people who were going to stop it before the inevitable were his corner. Hooker was throwing extremely feeble punches at the end of 2 and in 3 he had nothing at all, it was the perfect time for a corner stoppage, but it's is MMA so they gotta let him be a warrior instead

I was pulling for Barboza hard but I'm actually glad that he wasn't able to land one of those knees to the head from the clinch that he was trying to set up at the end.

The refs are incompetent 90% of the time.

Ortega and Hooker should be pissed at there corners as well as the refs.

But god damn. If thats my homie up in there and im watching that unfold. Im throwing in the towel.

Its a real issue

Not to mention Herb sacrificing CB to the just bleed God, Joe Warren getting brain damage in the Pat Curran fight, any many others.

Tired of seeing refs and coaches let fighters take immense amounts of punishment when they don't need to. Hooker was done after the second round, yet the doctor, his coaches and the ref let him continue.

This is a horrible trend and it has to stop. Unfortunately it seems only the worst case scenario will most likely happen before anyone starts taking responsibility for the fighters health and safety.

^This. MMA culture RE stoppages is trash. In boxing, that fight would have been stopped by the corner after the second round. The ref should have ended it after the first big body kick.

Being able to stand and take a beating is not effective defense. Hooker was a punching bag in third and he'd already taken a shitload of damage in the first two rounds. This stupidity is going to get someone killed on national TV or PPV one of these days.

He was done in the 2nd round, he was moving in slow motion like a zombie for the last few minutes and then had nothing in round 3. Its just hard to say throw in the towel because unlike boxing theres so many ways to lose, weve seen guys make miraculous comebacks with seconds left.

it's true it's rare, but it shouldn't be. they should have done the same for ortega, these refs need to know what they're watching.

Nah, these guys are willing to go and die out there. Doctor looked at Hooker, he passed the early concussion protocol and wanted to continue, you don't tell your man not to go out there! It's easy to cringe at home and say to stop the fight, but Hooker will get mad props for going out there. Was surprised really at all the Hooker hype in this fight. I mean not many guys are standing with Barboza and leaving that octagon in one piece. He only really loses to wrestlers and guys who can get him to the ground for the sub. I think if Dan would have pressured from the beginning and not played that damn distance game he could have worn Barboza out and finished.
