Anyone ever visited or lived there? Planning a month-long trip there, and doing the research, but it's always good to hear the gritty reality without a sugar-coated, rose-colored bias. Probably will stay in Mong Kok, Kowloon or the New Territories as those are the least expensive places. I'll be working online so reliable internet is a big concern. And I'm learning Cantonese now, and can say "I'm American" .. ngoh hie may-gwohk yan...which literally translates into "I'm from the beautiful country" lol. So anyone with any advices, suggestions, experiences or warnings about Hong Kong, bring it.

Tell them Jackie Chan rhymes with Can. Then laugh at them.

Been there many times. Almost took a university position there a few years ago.

I'm guessing your relationship kept you in the mainland? How would you describe the differences between China and HK?

I was there for a few days when I visited Taiwan a few years back. It's not a cheap city for a tourist, so have a lot of cash on hand. There is a large presence of foreigners in the city, and the night life is always fun. Do dig around the street food stands, since the snacks there are to die for.

I've worked a couple of contracts in HK. Was...interesting.

Look for a white, tall, former American named 'Goldenbear'...he'll hook you up.

Join the Red Poles and smash some Hong Kong Booty that's my advice

Hong Kong is great, cleaner, more western amenities etc.

It was actually before I got married but I was just offered a better deal in the mainland. Living in hk can be quite expensive....rent there is pretty bad if you want to live near your work. I'm not really looking to spend 2-3 hours a day commuting. My commute here now is ~ 5 minutes.

Love Hong Kong. I've been twice. Don't really have much to recommend locally, I was there as business and leveraged that time for some touristy stuff.

Get some bespoke suits made.

Eat at some Michelin starred restaurants.

Ferry to Macau and gamble.

Get some cookies from Jenny's bakery in tst.

Makes sense. How were the Hong Kongers compared to the Chinese? I'm anxious to spend some time around more civilized, respectful people than what I deal with here in the Philippines. And from what I hear, Chinese are similar to Filipinos in their manners, decency, etc. Thanks for the input.

I lived there for a bit.

Lan Kwai Fong is a good place to go for drinks, and I suggest you try some korean/mongolian bbq
but why would you stay in Hong Kong an entire month

Why not? I'm headed back to the US next year and will likely never see Asia again. I'd probably regret it if I didn't. I might even stay longer than a month, if it works out. Keep the comments coming, everyone. They are all appreciated.

what I mean is if you don't have any commitments to stay in one place why not see more of Asia

Good question, and I may end up seeing all of Asia after almost 6 years in only the Philippines. But I usually don't enjoy trips to countries where there is no chance of me staying there for a while. HK seems right up my alley.

This is a much better choice than spending a month there trying to Cantonese, which is probably going to be a wasted effort.

wait wait wait, not a week, not two weeks but a MONTH in HK? You will be bored out of your mind in a few days. That place is meant for spending one weekend at the most. There is simply not enough to do there. Save your money and go to a more interesting country. Mainland China is much better than HK.

I really, really hope TS is about whores and opium.

Thanks...this is what I wanted as feedback. I've spent a year in NYC and enjoyed that, so it seemed like HK would suit me. I'm just trying to take a break from the Philippines. Malaysia looks nice, but beer is not cheap and Muslims. Any more HK advice is appreciated. Thanks all.
