in my protein shake i mean.

i've been hearing that adding dextrose into a protein shake is beneficial. what makes dextrose better than just adding table sugar? and what about honey? can i use either of these instead of dextrose and receive the same benefit?

i usually put some oatmeal in w/ the shake, but some simple sugar is needed as well, correct?

if i put in a banana do i have to bother w/ any of the other simple sugars?

thanks.

honey contains a large amount of fructose sugar, the same as banana's, fructose sugar has a far lower GI then dextrose, honey is not a bad alternative but dextrose is far superior. You will recieve some of the same benefit but not as much.

You are talking PWO correct? thats the main time to use simple sugars in protein shakes. i would avoid the oatmeal PWO because it will slow your uptake down.

Banana is better then nothing, but not near the best

thanks for the info....

so no oatmeal at all pwo, or is it ok as long as the high gi stuff is in there too?

what about run of the mill table sugar in place of dextrose?

Oatmeal is not that bad PWO, but the more slow digesting fiber you add to your PWO shake the more its going to slow down the ingestion process specifically your gastric emptying. So why add any at all then? The same goes with most fats.

Table sugar will work as it has a high GI, i am not too sure of the actual breakdown of table sugar into simple sugars (glucose, galactose and fructose) i've been doing alot of reading on sugars etc and will let you know about table sugar when i am certain.
