So the nearest gym to me is like 50$ a month which is pretty expensive, plus since I cant drive (14 y.o.) I would have to have my mom take me. I was looking up home gym setups on youtube and I came across some buff dude video (I take most of the stuff in there videos with a grain of salt). It showed them making a power rack and a bench with 4*4s and metal pipe and some other stuff. As my dad is part owner of a shipping company he can get all the wood for 15$ instead of like 70$. I did all the maths on it all and it would be around $200 plus I will be getting a barbell with weights. So around 400 in total, maybe more. What do you guys think of this?

Edit: If you want to see the videos just search buff dudes bench or buff dudes power rack

Pros:
My dad would fund it as he would start saving money in about 10 months
My mom says it would be a good project for me and my dad
I could work out at anytime as my mom doesn't have to drive me and I am homeschooled
I could squat, deadlift, bench, and pullup. Most of the big stuff
Never have to wait for anybody
No idiots

Cons:
Initial cost
Safety? The stuff they showed seems pretty safe?

Edit: if this is in the wrong section, could one of the mods move it to the right one?

Ive seen the video before and the rack looked great. Go for it.

I bought my power rack and over 300lbs in olympic weights + bar for less than $400 - secondhand. Maybe look around depending where you are, craigslist, kijiji, etc. Got over 300lbs in bumpers secondhand too for a decent deal.

If you can find the proper setup for a good price, I don't see any value in making your own out of 4x4's.

What subsection of craigslist did you find weights in? Because I cant seem to find anything weight related.

I bought my power rack, barbells, and weights on craigslist for under $400 total. I just searched under the "for sale" section for weights, power rack, barbell, etc.

Stopped reading at 'homeschooled'....

Bigot much? Because I homeschool it somehow makes me less and I am therefore not able to lift weights? Or is it you think that I cant talk to people and therefore dont want to go to the gym? There is a stereotype surrounding homeschoolers that I resent, sure there are some that perfectly fit the stereotype, but the vast majority are pretty normal where I live (your experience may vary). Also I go to a co-op with real teachers where I "socialize" with my friends, I am involved in 2 sports outside of the homeschooling world, and I spend more time with my friends (that are "normal" ie: they and I also hang out with public schoolers.) than most public schoolers. In short, fuck off idiot.

Ironwolf got sonned.

Anyway, I've built my own gym and love it. The most expensive thing is acquiring weights. I bought a standard Olympic weight set (300lbs) for $160 at Dunham Sports. From there, I just keep buying 45's. I'd been accumulating dumbbells over the years, but you can piece together adjustable dumbbells for not that much.

Everyone always says Craigslist, but I've never found a bargain on there. Good luck to you if that works.

Are you talking about the B.U.F.F Dudes homemade power rack? That's the set up I'm about to use to construct my rack. It looks the sturdiest of all the DIY racks I've seen. All the materials cost $130, so not bad at all.

If you want something cheaper, my first setup I made came from http://homemadestrength.blogspot.com/2011/04/more-than-just-squat-stands.html
these cost around $50 to make, and are extremely sturdy. I added some braces to the back for balance, and two safeties for benching.

Here's what it looks like finished. And I constructed my own bench too.

Craiglists is good for weights. I got nearly 600 pounds and a decent bar for around 280. Just watch out for the weirdos.

Lol. I remember those homeschool sports "teams"....hah!!!!

There is a really nice power rack on Craigslist for under $300 by me right now. It's huge and looks to be for sale by a gym. If I had the space I'd be all over that thing. There are other home-gym type racks and squat stands for sale for $120 to $300 too. I searched the for sale listings for "power rack", then hit filter results and unchecked any categories that were automotive, musical instrument, audio, and electronics related.
