    While Rolling, whatever..

I found one thread while searching on breathing. How breathing through the nose is better than breathing through the mouth but does anyone have a technique they use during rolling that helps them REMEMBER TO BREATH THE WHOLE TIME YOUR WORKING? I have been training for about a year and a half (I know that's not a long time) but I still find myself holding my breath a lot....

    http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f12/bjj-breathing-840398/

Does anyone have anything they do besides the "Roll More" solution?

    Thanks,

    Stafford

I use to do this, now i just make sure I exhale through my mouth. It just takes practice i guess.

I was always taught "In through your nose, out through your mouth" in every other sport I did. Now when I get to combat sports (BJJ, Muay Thai, Judo) its "in AND out thru your nose"

    Odd to anyone else?

It helps a lot to make a point of just focusing on your breathing (whatever breathing method you are focused on using) for a certain amount of time during training to drill it into your system. Much in the same way that you would remind yourself to keep strong posture and base, or to relax and use less strength, or to be more aggressive when you are rolling; breathing is a skill that needs to be focused on to be ingrained in your training.

I like abdominal breathing, in through the nose, out through the nose.

I don't focus on breathing, I focus on relaxing. Breathing comes naturally when you manage to relax.

After gassing from not breathing I learned pretty fast to relax and breathe. In the same vein, using strength too much will wear you down the same way.

    Just constantly focus on relaxing.

I can tell you that police are trained to be very verbal during confrontations for several reasons....one of them being that when you are talking you are forced to breath.

While talking during rolling may be considered annoying or rude, you could always "talk to yourself" in your head and it may have the same effect. I really don't know. Breathing during confrontation is just something I learned over several years from different disciplines.

Think of a song so you'll have something to give you "pace" to breath. It's silly, but might help you.

That's a big problem for me. I will forget to breathe. One of my instructors got onto me about that when we were rolling a while back.

It's weird how a lot of sports teach in through nose, out through mouth. I've been taught that too, but in track and cross country no way lol. We even had a few days of gimmick training where we were forced to breath only through our nose and it was far far more difficult.

I'd say in and out through your mouth (and your moms, ZING) unless you're competing in something where you can get knocked out.

Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose will force you to remain calm. The more energy you are using, the more likely you are to breathe through your mouth. This relaxed pace is really helpful for BJJ. Focusing on breathing through your nose will definitely help your endurance and your game.

    breathing comes naturally by relaxing.

Here's my idea of why its in thru. nose and out thru. nose:
Your partner doesn't want to smell your breath while rolling.
Now why its not in thru mouth out thru nose: most people don't breathe that way.

Just my idea. Maybe it does have a functional value to breathe in and out thru the same orifice.
