Background: Im 42 a white belt that started training in 2008 and stopped in 2010, I trained about 12 months during that time due to my being a severe drinker. I started at 160lb and smoked. I had stopped for a few months at one point and got in great shape and actually had no gas tank concerns, I did the "sequential fatigue challenge" bi weekly and it helped. I competed at 168lb and felt like a cardio juggernaught. I will never get that light again due ot being older and fat and a lot more muscle.

After I stopped BJJ I got into powerlifting and I think from holding my breath during the heavy lifts I think I've developed the habit of holding my breath during movements that require strength. I'm currently 205lb and am losing weight with the goal to get to 190 for medium heavy.

I realize that my technique should allow me to preform movements without gassing but I'm a white belt who has been back since October so I have a tendancy to muscle things at times, not all spazzy crazy like but muscling none the less.

every excpeinced person I roll with comments on my breathing.

I try to focus on my breathing but it only helps marginally. Its so embarrassing cardio tapping because my skill level is entry level blue (not a big deal) but my cardio is holding me back from being promoted and its been a LONG road for me.

Thanks Sherbros

EDIT: I never touch booze now and I don't smoke regularly, sometimes I fall off the smoking wagon.

Quit smoking and just tell yourself to breathe. Also, in powerlifting you hold your breath to lift extremely heavy weight. While, jiu jitsu you are exerting yourself, only in specific situations do you even need to throw that much power into a technique.

You need to tell yourself to breathe during the roll. Next time you train, tell yourself breathe, breathe and do it. Concentrate on that only. It doesn’t matter if you lose or win, just concentrate on breathing.

I have quit smoking, thanks for the reply. I have been doing that just not regularly. Maybe I will just focus on that for the next month.
