From my readings it has to do with two things :
1. In warrior societies, guys are always together, so they end up having sex together.
2. In Greece, all the good values were masculine values, so while women were good for reproducing, true love was found in other males.

It's has to do with the fact that people did not have "sexual identities" like we do nowadays, whether you bucked a woman or a man in the arse you were still fulfilling the role of a dominant male. If you got bucked in the arse then you fulfilling that subservient role. Ultimately you can only reproduce with a female so that was still the relationship which counted.
