I was just thinking today about a couple of monumental almosts that changed the entire landscape of two divisions in mma today:

Rashad Evans was supposed to fight Anderson Silva, not Chris Weidman.

Ian McCall should have fought Joseph Benavidez for the inaugural FLW championship.

Could you imagine the UFC if things would have happened? What are other major almosts.

even if rashad had fought anderson, the chris would have fought him shortly after. one way or another, and trounced him unmerciful

for those who don't know these stories:
Before his fight with Lil Nog, Rashad was told that if he won that fight, he could drop down and get an immediate title shot against AS. For anyone who watched that fight, Rashad fought very much like a man who was promised a title shot, and ended up losing because of it. So, UFC had to go with the lesser-known Chris Weidman and the rest is history.

This one is a little bit more speculative, but in his first match against Uncle Creepy, Demetrious Johnson fought to a draw. The issue was, it was a tournament and the fight was contracted to go to sudden death if a draw was called. A misinterpretation of the score cards initially ruled the fight for McCall, and it was not sorted out until after it was too late. At the end of the 3rd round Demetrious was totally gassed and McCall almost had him finished. Many believe if it were to go to a 4th round sudden death, McCall would have won that fight, going on to fight Joseph Benavidez for the title. Would Demetrious have been able to recover from that loss and become the unstoppable FLW champ he is today?

Where do you find the idea of a trouncing? Neither of their fights could be considered a trouncing.

Shad was supposed to fight shogun, not Jones. Prior to that Jones and Shadtrained together and didnt seem to want to fight. If shad had faught and beat shogun things may have been very different.

Chael almost beat Anderson
There is a chance Chael's fight against Jones would have been stopped if the round ended and the ref saw Jones toe fracture.

The Punch that shattered an entire Organization.

Kimbo Vs. Ken Shamrock - Shamrock gets cut backstage before the fight and pulls out, literal last minute replacement Seth Petruzelli steps in and pulls off the ultimate upset defeating EliteXC Cash Cow Kimbo Slice.

Condit was about to be the ww champ if GSP had been less safe after getting hit with that head kick.

Mirko Crocop ALMOST having a title fight against Randy Couture still irks me. It should have happened, not a big fan of either and Gonzaga went and got himself cut from UFCs roster a few losses later after that headkick.

Oh, and Johny Hendricks SHOULD have a W over GSP. Everyone emptying out of Buffalo Wild Wings were shouting/mumbling "robbery" "gsp lost" "the other dude won""bullshiet" etc

EDIT: So my answer is Johny Hendricks "almost" beat GSP

We almost got to see Maia vs Koscheck.

The fight was never scored for Ian. It was a draw but miscalculated as a win for DJ.

Jones' toe vs chael and rich Franklin's arm vs chuck... had either fight made it to the end of the round, good chance they'd have been called off, with a very different outcome.

That fight would have been amazing, both fighters at a relative high in their careers, Mirko still fairly fresh off winning the 2006 PrideFC Open Weight Grand Prix Championship where he took out Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett in the same night, Randy Couture coming off the epic fight with Tim Sylvia to win the UFC's Heavyweight Title.

We were so close, many felt Mirko should have received an immediate title shot when he signed with the UFC -- instead the UFC chose to give Mirko a couple tune up fights - 1st against Eddie Sanchez at UFC 67 (*The card also featured the debut fights for Rampage Jackson and Lyoto Machida) even after Mirko merked Eddie fans felt it was time to set up the Couture VS. Crocop showdown ....

But again the UFC decided to have Mirko fight in England against Gonzaga with the winner getting a title shot -- Mirko who had trained with Fabricio Werdum felt Gonzaga would be a cake walk as Werdum had already defeated Gonzaga fairly easily....Mirko underestimated Gonzaga and the rest is history.

Fedor almost added Couture and Barnett skulls to his collection
