How did that happen? Shit's hilarious. I knew the UFC hype machine could go into overdrive but this is overboard. Beating Jessaymn "Super Prospect" Duke and Bayzler gets you into the top 5? wtf

Agreed. Bethe was clearly overrated coming into this fight.

Never, EVER underestimate the power of the UFC Hype Machine.

The only machine known to man that actually MAKES "superstars", "champs" and #1 contenders.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not sure if it was to enable better promotion (in which case the rankings aren't really independent) or if their promotion and willingness to give her a shot had a major impact on the rankings. In any case, the shallowness of the division played into it, hence her being the one to "earn" the shot in the first place, and, even with that, she relied on drama to do it with the cute idea of the finger thing and talking shit. She also has panache. She's just not that dangerous of a fighter in terms of her intangibles, and was very untested.

A #14-15 ranking would be more fitting.

Let her fight that Murphy chick and actually earn her ranking in the top 10-15. let alone top 5 haha

Dana mentioning it right before the PPV ('she's beaten the 1, 2, 3, 4; Bethe is 5') proved to me that the UFC influences the media members who do the rankings. It's inexplicable that she leapfrogged Kaufman and Eye without fighting for almost a year.

The rankings don't matter in WBW. There's Ronda and then there's all the other chicks who can't beat Ronda.

This is true but I didn't think they'd be so brazen. Then again, I'm one of the few fans that actually notices/cares about this shit, and in the words of emjay, rankings don't matter

To be fair, not by anyone who actually follows the sport

Even Rogan was incredulous when he was talking about Bethe having confidence, clearly showing he thought it was a joke too

But hey as long as people buy joke fights why not make them

Just like Poirer was also top 5 when fighting Conor, and Siver magically appeared in the top 10... UFC rankings are a joke

At least Poirier was a legit top 10 fighter. Bethe got in there by beating non top 15 ranked fighters.

She jumped from like #10 to #7 to #5 all in the period of time between the Rousey fight being in the works until tonight.

That kind of rankings shuffling just to try to make the title shot look legitimate.

Definitely overrated. The 9-0 record was impressive, but also a little deceiving due to the competition she faced. It reminds me of earlier days in the UFC, when a guy like Anderson could be an underdog against CHRIS FUCKING LEBEN LOL. WMMA just has to go through the same growing pains because there are not enough fighters with real experience.

She lasted longer than clear #1 Cat and perennial top 5-10 Alexis Davis combined.

Might as well give her the instant rematch then.
