High School Valedictorians Reveal They Are Undocumented Immigrants - These young women graduated at the top of their classes — they're also undocumented immigrants.

This is the kind of story the pro-immigrant side loves. These girls come over here and study hard enough to get to the top of their class and are now poised to attend University on a scholarship and become productive members of society.

But I think the video and the sorts of arguments that revolve around stories like this that try to tug at our heart strings are a bit of a red herring. Its true that Trump has popularized some charged rhetoric surrounding the issue but I believe many people don't deny that illegal immigrants are honest and hard working people who want simply want a better life. The question is what is the impact of illegal immigration on the US and given that impact should we attempt to strengthen our border and to what extent should we enforce our current immigration laws on illegal immigrants who are already here?

So what do you guys think? Are stories like this emotionally charged red herrings? Or do you think cases like these are representative of illegal immigrants? If so what should the US do moving forward? Deport and/or strengthen the border or just give up on enforcing immigration laws and allow immigrants to flow to and from the US as dictated by other factors like political instability and poverty in Central America?

Pointy elbows, they're not sending their best.

I think that, in short, this is still a nation of, by and for immigrants. We've been down this road so many times in this country, and we've always been great for it. Let's not fill ourselves with fear, destroy our confidence, damage our economy, and alienate our friends.

Deport them. Mexico could use them to figure out how to pay for Trump's wall.

Honestly, deport them. They won't have trouble getting back. Right now they're getting a failing grade in civic morality.

Don't you think its reasonable to make a distinction between illegal and legal immigrants?

Schools have become a bastion for pushing liberal agendas. i wouldnt be surprised to find out the staff was illegal as well and pulled strings for political favors.

Who gives a shit? Ted Kaczynski was a fucking genius too. Know what a smart illegal alien, a talented illegal alien, a good looking illegal alien, and a rapist murderer illegal alien have in common? All criminals.

Let everybody in. Africa has 1 billion people I say they all deserve American citizenship. India has 1.2 billion people of which half are in poverty. Why can't they come to America?

It is racist to have quotas. Let the entire world enter America. Because it's 2016.

I don't know anyone that has said illegal immigrants can't be intelligent

the point is that they're ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Fucking deport them and if they're so valuable to society I bet they'll find a way back

Do people really believe every single immigrant is a hard worker?

Yes, we should distinguish the people who live, work and otherwise obey our laws here as legal immigrants. We should make that distinction as soon as possible.

Pointing out a few outliers has zero relevance to the issue. I'm not really sure what point is trying to be made.

So these illegal immigrant teachers and administrators managed to evade I-9s, LiveScan and background checks and obtain jobs in public high schools?

I would say they stole those awards from actual Americans. And its time to give it back

We've generally taken the best immigrants. So it's not entirely for everyone.

They weren't exactly hiding in the shadows, they were going to public school, both are going to college for free and they didn't have to declare their immigration status on the stage (wouldn't surprise me if they get invited to the White House for doing so)

The majority of public school students in Texas are hispanic, so I imagine they aren't the only 2 illegal immigrants in Texas public schools. Public schools are paid for by the tax payers and most illegal immigrants are poor and pay next to nothing in real estate taxes.

These HS mentioned in the article isn't very good and the NYT article made no mention of SAT scores for either valedictorian.

Ms. Martinez, according to WFAA, a local ABC affiliate. She told the station that she had a full scholarship to Yale with plans to study medicine.

When Mayte Lara Ibarra, the valedictorian of her high school’s graduating class, revealed her plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin on a scholarship, she did what any graduate would do: She shared her excitement on social media.

Ms. Ibarra also declared, proudly, that she is undocumented.

“Valedictorian, 4.5GPA, full tuition paid for at UT, 13 cords/medals, nice legs, oh and I’m undocumented,”

When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their worst. They're sending you. They're sending you. They're sending people that have promising futures and they're bringing those futures with us. They're bringing knowledge. They're bringing ambition. They're scholars. And some, I assume, are bad people.
