True, but if he's going for MMA training, he isn't going to be competing for a few years. He has time to train.

so what? all the more he can learn from both his instructor and instructional sources. you can possibly think it's better to just go to your instructor 2 times a month.
 
Yeah, they work fine like that. I got mine from Sam's also. Just use 2 layers, much cheaper than buying real mats. Good luck!!

These mats SHOULD NOT be use by untrained or novice grapplers, they are made to walk on and provide a little cushion under foot. There a very few replacments for real tatami, yes, you can grapple on concrete, but who in there right mind would do that. If you dont have a proper place to train, find a rec center, gymnastics school, any place that has proper mats and ask if you could use or rent space once or twice a week. If you train, train smart .
