Hey everyone,

I just have a very quick question about something that happens to me sometimes when I spar. I've been kickboxing for around 6 months now and I'm pretty good, my only problem though is when I'm rushed. When they decide to move in forward on me and start throwing bundles of punches, straights, hooks, whatever, they just come after me with everything that they have. Similar to what Vitor Belfort did when he fought Wanderlei Silva...Does anyone know a good tactic on how to counter this? I've thought of blocking the shots with my forearms, but they often lead to a leg kick. Although if I do move quickly and dig my forearms into his chest then I can push him away or land some type of shot. I've seen that tactic done in Mixed Martial Arts but it doesn't seem to be the best way to defend this. Can anyone help? It would be appreciated, Thanks.

So are you saying they are shutting you down?

Some basics to work on:
Keep on moving - footwork.
Work angles - move off @ 45 degrees and keep throwing a stiff jab.
Whatever you do don't just ball up.

Don't know about kickboxing but in boxing, you have to put your guard up, and look at your opponent. You can look to counter and/or circle out and try to stop him with some jabs between his punches. I've been recently trying to fight fire with fire. You can try that too. If the guy throws a combo, throw with him.

sidestepping is good or keeping circling the guy so he can't rush in on you.

but i know what you mean by the bullrush

what i used to do is let them come in while i cover up and wait for the opportunity to throw a hook.

generally, when someone bull rushes you, they lose most of their defense and are prone to well timed punches. of course, you need to be able to defend all those punches

I tend to keep throwing a lot of jabs out there, and you can catch them coming in.. and then theyre a bit more hesitant the next time..

but yea, I think I usually keep throwing out the jab and circle

what are some of the in gym workout that i could do to improve my punching power???

From a boxing viewpoint.... Im pretty tall for my weight, and mostly fight against shorter, stockier guys. Most of them try to bullrush straight at me and pin me against the ropes. Using the jab doesnt stop a bullrusher- theyll just walk stright through it. Against these guys, you only jab to make them afraid you're about to throw your 2. Using a HARD 1-2 is the only way to make them respect your power and get hesitant about rushing you. Also, use footwork to your advantage. Make sure you get better angles on the other guy and never let yourself get pinned on the ropes.
My 2 cents.
