i tried 2 techniques today during randori and im not sure if i was doing them right.

the 1st was a triangle choke variation. the guy was much bigger then me so i couldnt sinch my left leg behind my right knee. i reached my right hand over his back and grabbed my ankle for ruber guard, i then grabbed the same leg with my left hand and tried to finish the triangle with my left arm on the side of his neck. i was in good position and he said he had a hard time getting out and he started feeling the choke sometimes. i didnt squeeze hard bc i didnt want to hurt him if it was the wrong technique. i cant find the video online to this variation. did i need to hip in? he was a big guy and i dunno if id be able to do that, should i pull his head down by crossing my right hand over on the back of his head?

the 2nd was the same big guy over me on side control. i was on bottom. lets say im laying down and hes on my right side. i took my left hand and reached it around his neck and grabbed the back of the lapel on the neck with a thumb in. i then hipped out a little to create space and circled my left leg over his head. then i hipped in hoping for the choke. so hes still on the side with my left leg over his left side of his neck and my forearm over his right side of the neck. this is harder to explain then i thought but i hope you get the point.

any help is appreciated.thanks!

The 1st one sounds like a no-arm triangle, yes you can finish but it's harder... To get the triangle properly you want to be almost 90 degrees to your opponent, your calf should be chopping down perpendicular to their neck, then you will be able to close it.

The second one is a choke, you can get this same choke if you are going for an armbar from guard with a deep lapel grip and they pull their arm out, just keep the lapel grip and push the head down with the leg. The problem with doing it from your situation, is he can circle towards your head to clear the leg from off of his head, wheras in guard your other leg will stop him.

i had one arm in tho just couldnt sinch it with his arm across so i replaced it with my arm.
so i was doin the 2nd one right. he didnt circle to escape, he just tried to fight my grip, i gave up on it bc i didnt no the right technique

the reason you couldn't cinch it in is most likely you had the wrong angle and perhaps did not raise your hips.

first off, its not rubber guard, its more of a unlocked triangle if anything. If you have the triangle set up and you are holding your shin with your hand you need to put the other foot on his hip and push off to raise your hips up and also move your head out to the side. Then you can lock the triangle in fully.

the second one, you could probably catch someone like that but its a bit low percentage if you ask me. you can try to block his hip with your free hand to prevent him from circling around, but I still think its low percentage.

I wouldn't focus on subs from under sidecontrol. Rather focus on escaping or recovering guard...remember position before submission? It applies to both of your questions. your positioning is off but yet you are attempting to submit. work on your positioning and the rest will work itself out. my 2

pushing off him coulda made enough room to finish the triangle. didnt think of that. as far as geting better position for the 2nd one, i couldnt, im 5'8 160 and the other guy was 6'1 240 and just laying on me, couldnt even upa. just went for the sub so he would panic and i can transition to something els. it worked but i was just wondering if i could finish it from there. thanks for your help!
