Help sparring a wrestler

Discussion in 'Grappling Technique' started by tinker_190, Oct 10, 2005.

  1. Ok my background is primarily judo (actually, about 90%+ judo), and I don't have that much experience. There are some badass state wrestlers on my dorm floor and every once and a while (read: often) we end up throwing down for fun. However, because they have way more experience than me, I get owned.

So, basically, can anybody suggest a technique or move that a judoka could use on a wrestler?

I know the obvious one is "train harder". I am sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it when I searched.

i would go probably defend with a knee or a kick at the perfect time when they shoot in...... but since you don't want to hurt them I would go for the sprawl take there back......then the rear naked choke... keep it simple. it's good that you train with the, it will only improve your skills

Taking his back is what a wrestler is trained to not let you do.

i thought a wrestler was trained not to get pinned on there back so they would rather be on there stomach.... i don't wrestle, so I don't know

Yeah, but you also lose points if your opponent gets behind you. But they are trained to keep their head up and to post with their arms. So armbars and chokes are easier.

Use a sutemi nage to throw them and roll on top of them then get them in scarf hold and sub from there.

A well executed judo throw can usually catch a wrestler really off guard, and I'm speaking from experience.

In terms of Judo against wrestlers, and I am speaking from experince, stay forward and use footsweeps, De ashi, Ko uchi, sasae, o ouchi, most wrestlers have a staggered stance and have a leg forward, if you can clinch them before they shoot on you try breaking their balance and going for a footsweep, it works just be very careful in executing any forward throw whether it be a hip throw, or shoulder throw without a really good grip on them, preferable head and arm. That is why i stick with footsweeps.

Is this pure takedowns or does this include submissions as well? Take their back as wrestlers instinctively give their backs. They aren't that good on their backs as well.

When I compete and spar with wrestlers I notice that they pretyy often leave theair back open. So take their back and choke them out!

Noo... wrestlers (if they are in trouble) go to their stomachs. Where you can obviously get the back.

Judo guys tend to give their backs up ALOT...if thats happening with you, thats one thing that you can concentrate on.....also alot of wrestlers leave themselves open for the triangle....they're so aggressive and so thinking about attacking they often make very stupid mistakes in terms of jiu jitsu...or sub grappling.....also....they go all out for a few minutes....weather the storm because after about 5 minutes of non-stop all out gripping and aggression they will be dead....thats just my experience
