Im getting stuck trying to pass half guard alot in no gi... Ive been taught to sort of angle your hips?? so its easier to get the knee out pushing with your arm and then pass that knee to a semi mount with the foot stuck in halfguard... hope that makes sense..

im basically getting stuck on getting that knee out.. the other dude just pushes my knee back in... I try to control his arm but I still need my own arm free to get my knee out.. so I end up in a stalemate until I get sweeped or sumthing... any tips on what to do here??

Im a whitebelt btw

This is my favorite half guard pass, and a good instructional:

One thing would be to underhook his far arm and apply upper body pressure. The underhook is an important detail so don't neglect it.

If your right leg/knee is caught in half guard, You need a deep grip under your opponents head, reaching all way across and get a nice deep grip on his collar. Then you need an excessive amount of shoulder pressure, so much so that your opponent wants to tap out or allow the pass. It's his choice, 1. Stay there and get his face and neck smashed and hold onto that half guard or allow the pass so you relieve the pressure.

Be sure to be ready to back sit if he opens and bridges.

My favourite is this - thanks, Gerbil! :D

Ahah - sorry Luke - I failed to see you posted this as well.

The easiest solutions, imo:

1. Grab the wrist he's blocking your knee with. Pull it up out of the way and finish the pass.
2. You should already have a farside underhook, use it. Hand on the mat, hand walk the arm he's blocking with up to his head and from there you can torque his body towards your near side for the pass, go for the arm triangle, go for the razer arm lock, etc.

You could also look into the far side or near side knee slide pass or just the backstep pass if his half guard is loose.
