at my bjj class.... it is fairly easy to break a persons posture and choke, push his arm out triangle, armbar, rubber guard w/e
however....

when i grapple with my my friend, all he does is lay flat on my guard so i cant sweep well, and when ever i try to do sumthing with my arms, he just grabs my wrists and i cant move.... then he tries to strangulate me..... i can never get under/over hooks cus all he does is press his arms against my neck.... i cant do anything with my arms....

help me?

ok.... if he is seriously doing the rape/murder choke on you (ie: grabbing your neck with both his hands), and if hes in your guard, you should be in armbar city. or just push one arm off and take his back. if anyone is extending their arms out in your guard, the possibilities are endless. now if hes grabbing your wrists while hes in your guard, go for leg sweeps. if you dont sweep him, then hell have to let go of your wrists in order to post.

i tried to do the armbar, but he is seriously just laying on my guard, umm sprawling... i cant move my hips.. hes bigger than me and whenever i go for the armbar, he just elbows in and when i stop, he chokes me again....

Sounds like he's right where you want him to be to me...

If you can't move your hips out then it sounds to me like you're still in closed guard. When people do that to me, I put my hands on the back of his neck to keep him down, open up my legs and put them on his hips so I'm able to reposition my hips. I generally go to the New York version of rubber guard here.

You can move your hips, you just need to plant a foot on his hip or on the ground and use it to push off. Taking the back is also a great idea. There are also Kimura's from there and chokes. BJJ may be a "gentle art", but that doesnt mean you have to fight like a fairy. You can put your hand on his forehead and push his head up to get to his neck if you need to. The best thing about BJJ is that its so dynamic there are always options, no matter what your situation or position. Start thinking outside the box.

great post. I'm hoping to start bjj soon, (as far as i know there no bjj clubs near me!) so i'm gonna have to start hanging around this forum

why dont you try a guillotine? if hes 'sprawling' in your guard (and i dont think you have a good open guard yet), his head should be right near your stomach. just sink in a deep guillotine. there truly should be no excuse for someone to choke YOU while theyre in your guard.

Change from closed guard to Butterfly guard and EASY SWEEP.
