Helio Soneca's half guard DVD

i like soneca's stuff, short, sweet and to the point

he covers two positions: basic halfguard, and the variation where you put the shin in uke's hip (zen guard?). some basic stuff, drills, sweeps and taking the back from the basic halfguard position, and a bunch of nice subs from that shin in uke's hip variation halfguard.

he voiceovers the instructional with edited multiple angles of the technique. the only negative is there's this bad porno music in the background the whole time

This nasty thing happens to me when I use the Z Guard where the top guy sprawls on top of my knee, rendering me helpless.

Z Guard, keep the top knee shallow just on his hip. The top leg cross it over the bottom, now you have a strong Z guard where you can push your hips into them and stop a standard sprawl only. If they use their hands, you attack the farside arm with a kimura so he is pressured.

Bingo. Shallow is the key. If they happen to get you in that "weave through your legs" position, push their head to the ground and shrimp.

Is there any clips from this on the web that somebody can link me to so I can get a feel for it?

Thanks.:)

A couple of questions: First, judging by the length of the DVD compared to the number of techniques presented, am I correct in thinking that he doesn't go into very much detail?

Also, is there anything on this instructional that isn't readily available for free on the internet or covered in Kesting's and Saulo's DVDs?

There are a few nasty ways of getting the underhook when a person tries to weave his arm through, or do the "weave and sprawl".

soneca does go into detail, it's just edited with a voiceover so there's no two guys scrambling to get up to repeat the move, and quickly goes from one technique to another.

soneca is big on the details and goes over each essential step, but breaking it down with theory like saulo, does: no.

he goes into taking the back in a way that is slightly differnt than, for example, kesting does. the "oldschool" sweep is there (variation with a built-in kneebar), sweep from an opponent's d'arce attempt is something i haven't seen before, and like i said before, some of the subs off the z-guard are kind of cool, (even though at the moment i'm not much of a z-guard player)

Leo Kirby does a section on the Z guard in
One Dragon Martial Arts: Straight Blast Gym (Florida)

Do tell. There is a purple at my joint who loves this pass. Never can have enough counters.

If you like Helio Soneca's stuff check out his dvd on the cross knee guard pass. I have it and its awesome, one of the best dvds I've ever seen. It literally covers pretty much every single counter out there to the cross knee guard pass, how to counter their counter, and how to transition from the cross knee pass into submissions, and how to counter their submission counter to move back into a pass again!

I"m moving back home in a month and am going to be training at his school. I'm fucking stoked! Soneca is the man!

Hey Stephan. I'm sure you get this a lot, but I just wanted to tell you that I found your Dynamic Half Guard DVD to be one of the most thorough, well designed instructionals I've seen. Well done!

Not to take my own thread too off topic, but have you ever thought about making a Dynamic Top Game series? There isn't a whole lot out there about the sort of "floating" top game where you're constantly transitioning through various control positions and submission chains. There's a lot that could be done with no-gi knee on belly and reverse KOB, for instance.

i second that: soneca's stuff is pretty solid, (except for that whitebelt to bluebelt one)

i also have to say that is pretty damn classy for kesting to get on this thread, and offer real help instead of trying to sell his stuff; so i will do it instead:

kesting doesn't go into things like z-guard or overhook-halfguard , but he is thorough enough to acknowledge these things in his halfguard dvd, and there's a ton of great material there too.

Yes, I have Kesting's half guard dvd and it has completely re vamped my half guard game. I won't say that I'm hitting sweeps left and right at will (I still need practice) but what I have gained is a clear road map of what exactly I need to be doing, what sweeps I can work, and I know enough to at least keep my opponent constantly worrying about his balance or sometimes sweep him.

Yeah, Kesting's DVD is great. I'm just looking for something to complement it with as little overlap as possible.
