He was thrown around like a toy and got beat up. Against a more experienced opponent meaning not someone who hasn't proved anything, he won't be so lucky. Rory?

Im sure Benson will think long and hard about how you think he should run his career

Anyone seen the Blacklist? It's pretty good. I mean, it's so fast-paced that it forgot to establish anyone's character but Reddington's, but James Spader's performance (and always slightly-wobbling head) more than makes up for it. And they do get more character-focused eventually, but it was somewhat of a rough start, in my opinion.

I'm more interested in watching Benson at 170 after that. It has a lot of fresh matchups.

Agree with OP. It was a good showcase for him but he's probably better off at LW.

Let him put on some size before judging how he'd do against the top 10, Lombard, Hendricks and Woodley are the same height as him and Lawler is only 5'11. He would probably do good against Brown and Condit too even though they're taller.

agreed, stay in LW and fight some top 5 opponent.

Not ready to tell him that. He didn't have time to bulk up. Give at least another shot against top 10 if he wants it.

Yeah he is more interesting at 170, not many fresh matchups at 155. However I am discussing how he'll lack success in this division.

Yeah, definitely agree. We KNOW at 170 that he will beat almost everyone but not get the belt back. He has faced 90% of the top competition, won't beat the champion and I'm not interested in foregone conclusions after suffering thru the Anderson Silva era. Benson is such an interesting addition to 170, especially after last night. I think he could easily be top ten and could possibly make us rethink this silly notion of losing/gaining 20 pounds in one day just to gain an edge. Size is important, sure, but guys like Fedor and Cain have proven that if the size difference is no greater than 10-15%, it does not really matter if you have incredible skill, fight IQ and great cardio -- Benson seems cut of the same cloth and I believe he would really be a much more exciting fighter at 170 than 150 now.

I was thinking the other night that Brown would maul him

He should train strictly bodybuilding and go up to 205.

I, politely, disagree. At 155 he was fighting razor close fights most of the time, against Thatch he won all but one round and finished a really tough fighter (when's the last time he's finished anybody?). I think the cut also made him more susceptible to getting rocked and hurt by body shots (Pettis hurt him bad with body kicks but, while they seemed to stun him, the much larger and more powerful Thatch's knees didn't seem to hurt him nearly to the same extent). I think the trips from Thatch were more just really good timing and technique than him 'outmuscling' Bendo. Bendo was able to outmuscle Thatch at times (when he bulled him over for the first takedown, the second was more a product of great timing). I think taking away the drastic cut allows him to perform better. He was landing shots that looked like they had a lot of heat on them to Thatch's body (they looked way more powerful than any of his striking at 155). I also think he can withstand more punishment without the need to recover from the huge cut. IMO he should add about 5 to 7 lbs of muscle and stay at 170.

Edit: On top of all that, he only had 27 days before this fight. Give him 5 or so months to put on a little bit of quality weight and a full training camp behind him. I think he has the potential to crack the top 5.

He would do well at 170 and would be top 10, people seem to forget he took that fight on short notice and didn't even have a full camp. Slow the hate wagon and talk about him not doing well until he gets another fight with a full camp

Whatever he chooses, you got to admit he's got a massive pair of balls for calling out Rory Mac.

I agree. I was wondering for a while now if his seeming up and down performances where a result of the cuts finally catching up to him. People are downplaying Thatch now that Benson won...but that dude is no joke. I think not starching himself prefight may end up being a benefit in the long run.

why would he bulk up? He's never gonna be stronger than the 190lbers and he will lose lots of speed, which is his biggest advantage.
