I have a friend who would like to take his grappling game to the next level. This post is on behalf of him. My friend trains at a very well known BJJ academy, and he is looking for a gym to compliment his jiu jitsu with. Me and him both searched together and we came down to Gokor's Hayastan Academy and Tenri Judo. Which style would be a better compliment for bjj? Info from someone who has trained at either academy would be preferable. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Price and Schedule are not an issue, info on quality and instruction is preferable. Which style compliments BJJ better?

I think Hayastan is quite expensive, and Tenri is just a few days a week, so i would pick Tenri because its just a side thing.

Gi or nogi? Tenri for gi comp, hayastan for nogi.

Unless you're trying to be a professional competitor of some sort it probably doesn't matter which one is better in a vacuum. The 2 schools are probably 15-18 miles away from each other. Unless you live somewhere like Los Feliz were you're roughly equal distance from both where you live is going to play a big factor in what school you choose.

By the way, aren't you the guy who started the thread about choosing between Kron's School and Dynamix? Because if you're going to be living out that way the drive to either Tenri or Gokor is going to take roughly forever.

As I said, this thread refers to a friend not myself, and he does have his hopes of going pro.

Tenri University? In Japan? Pretty much a Mecca of Judo.

Thinking more like Tenri in LA. Some sick judokas there even if it is in 'Murica.

Edit: I'd honestly go for Hayastan, as I think their focus will be more useful for BJJ overall. This is an opinion in no way formed by actually training at either place though.

Had an old judo coach who trained at Tenri. If you're not already at a decent level in judo, be prepared to be roughed up a bit. There were some really good guys there. Don't know what it's like nowadays though. Maybe it's different.

Heck, there's videos of Xande training at Tenri and getting roughed up.
Much respect to Xande for putting up vids of himself getting waxed (albeit by some great judokas).
