Was it his bad eating habits? Or his body just wasn't made for combat?
everyone is different, some people can take more abuse than others, it's that simple. Holyfield had a million wars and he still speaks better than bowe. Ali took tons of abuse but he most likely didn't take as much as many people who ended up better off, you just never can tell how things are going to turn out. Some guys get cut easier, some get kayoed easier, some get permanently damaged easier.
It was the golota fights. Esoecially the 2nd.Before the fight he was quick witted and the post fight interview he was mumbling and was pretty incoherent and stayed that way.
I can't really remember that happening to a guy night and day after a fight.
maybe, he ain't as bad as Bowe though. Problem with even being able to tell with some guys is that they never did speak well to begin with. Joe Frazier was country, he spoke country so of course his version of english wouldn't be the same as Ali's, but it's obvious how Joe spoke a lot different by the mid 70's. speech doesn't always tell you everything either, one of my old trainers told me that he met Marvin Hagler, he said he had damage, I said "his speech is fine, i don't think so" he said "not speech, his eyes, very sleepy" which is true with boxers I see, it's like there is some disruption in their brainwaves, and they seem to come and go, it's sad really and frightening that men continue to fight in that condition. Hell, Ali was well on the way to dementia/parkinson's or whatever they tried to call it before he took that hellacious beating from Holmes. As far as Holyfield, he never strikes me as someone with lots of problems, other people seem to think they see it, and he certainly had more than enough wars. One thing for certain, many boxers are fine until they hit their last few years. Willie Pep was sharp as a tack, Ingemar Johannsen was sharp, many, many more and they fell off a cliff in their final years. My theory is that the damage that happens magnifies with age. George Chuvalo always sounds way better than you have any right to expect, but I would not be surprised if his last couple years are in a fog.Holyfield is fucked in the head. You can hear it in his speech, how he talks, and the biggest thing to me is his eyes. Every fighter that has bench wear has that same look in their eyes. It is like a deep stare like when you ask a second grader "what's fifteen plus nineteen?"
he was, he really was, Larry Merchant mentioned that he had some wars before the Holyfield fights but he didn't mention which fights those were. After the second golota fight, a fight he looked like death warmed over before it even started, a fight where he lost over 50 pounds and got down to 235 thinking he'd be as good as he was when he weighed that vs. Holyfield in the first fight, instead he was emaciated, dehydrated, taking nutritional advice from kook Dick Gregory. He sounded a little puncy before the second fight, immediately after it he sounded terrible, even today he sounds better than he sounded after that fight.Riddick was actually starting to sound a little punchy even before his first fight with Holyfield. Then he had a handfull of real wars in the ring. No wonder he was done so early.
he had a kitchen built into his bedroom after winning the beltWas it his bad eating habits? Or his body just wasn't made for combat?
