Sometimes sequels are BETTER than the follow up ... but sometimes don't live up.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Terminator 2 for example, they blew the first one out of the park and the first one was awesome too.

But I'm racking my brain and am trying to think of an example where a third movie, a part 3 (is there a name for that when sequel means 2) is better than the first two

I find in most cases the third outing is usually actually the worst.

Has this ever happened?

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King...

Return of the Jedi.

And you are insane if you don't think Return of the King isn't good

I'm trying to find an example of then 3 was the best, doesn't mean that 3 isn't good, but in this case I prefer Empire -- all were great tho!

I disagree

You're entitled to your opinion even though you are wrong.

It won Best Picture Oscar in 2003. If you don't go based of critical merit, it cleaned up at the box office. If you don't think those 2 criteria as a huge success then I don't know what else to tell you. It's widely regarded as one of the best movies of all time. The only flaws is some of the CGI is crap (Legolas vs. Oliphant) and the endings dragged on way to long.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is another one that is legit awesome and waaay better then Temple of Doom. I am a DOOMER too. I actually somewhat enjoy that movie.

Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban with Gary Oldman (3rd movie) was the shit.

Die Hard 3 with Sammy Jackson was really fun, though the 1st one is obviously GOAT.

That scene where they kept hinting that Gandolf would fight the king of the ghost people ... whatever .the wreth king?

I was looking forward to that!

But no .... the hobbit and a woman had to beat that guy, and then the women proclaims that only a woman could do it ... it was like a whole woman's lib thing

Did a women write this?

Not hating on women, was just lame / dissappointing as someone who never reads

The World's End
Toy Story 3
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
The Last Crusade
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Bourne Ultimatum
Army of Darkness
Back to the Future III
Before Midnight
Goldfinger

Maybe not better- but all good.

Oh so you're just a sexist. Got it. Weren't you that one guy in the Star Wars thread ripping on Rey and Jyn Erso too? Gandalf always takes a back seat cause he's not really allowed to interfere with men, it's part of his mandate from the Valar. The supreme race that created him and his Wizard/Istari kin, Saruman, the 2 blue wizards and Radagast the Brown from the Hobbit movies.

That's why they go on the ship at the end back to Valaria cause their job in middle earth is done. They were sent to help assist in the threat of Sauron.

Also, they were foreshadowing since Two Towers that Eowyn (the blonde chick) was more of a tomboy and a warrior then some isolated royal member.

I like Return of the Jedi, Battle of Five Armies, Back to the Future 3, Matrix Revolution, Alien 3. All are fitting conclusions.

Pretty decent list. Although I would have At Worlds End and Back to the Future III as the weakest of their respective trilogies for me personally.
