Has the level of highschool wrestling in your area declined?

It has in my area. There used to be guys from my town that won/placed at Ontario Highschool championships(ofsaa), provincials, nationals, summer games etc...I went to one of my old highschool practices earlier this year to help coach after a long ass layoff, out of shape, due to injuries and was still owning everybody but the captain. I know being 23 years old wrestling highschool kids I will be a lot more mature and stronger but still. They just don't seem to be as good as my generation was. All the kids thought I was a university wrestler/former highschool wrestling force haha. I was very medicore in highschool. I probably won half my matches and lost half, but I always had really tough guys in my weight class. I see some of the guys win regionals and if you were to take those guys and put them against the guys in the same weight classes in my time the guys from my time would absolutely embarress them. There are some slick wrestlers still but the guys in my time were absolute killers. However womens wrestling has improved tremendously. Back in my day watching women wrestle was like watching paint dry. Now they are a lot more vicious and technical. Anybody else find this is happening?

No. I'm from the CIF Southern Section in California. Always was nails, always will be nails.

My district has gotten better but my Highschool has gotten worse.

When I graduated we won 2 Regional titles placed top 10 in the Beast of the East and were ranked in the nation at 1 point.

I don't know if my team has been within 3 matches of being above .500 since our graduating class.

In my last year of HS, my school's team had 6 ppl (and one senior student helping out). I never went out because everyone was in grade 9 or 10.

When i was in grade 9/10, the team had dudes winning Canadian nationals and what not. A lot of high schools in Ontario don't even have wrestling teams.

I graduated HS in Vermont in 2004. High school wrestling was just about dead here. The rise in popluarity in MMA is bringing high school wrestling back to life as far as I can see.

Sarnia used to be pretty strong in the wrestling. Trevor VanDyke FTW! But that was a long time ago.

The real measure is how they are doing against people their own age, at WOSSA, OFSAA and the various tourneys. Southern Ontario is a powerhouse for wrestling in Canada (but still relatively weak by US standards - at least was the case in my day. There were always a few guy who could make a go of it in the states, though.)

Sounds like a case of the "good ol' days" to me.

I'm from Canada so our wrestling isn't too big here. I went to school with 1700 kids and we didn't have a wrestling team..

I am in my 30's and never wrestled so I am probably not qualified to answer this but I think the Highschool wrestling should be better because of the explosion of the UFC. More competitors = more competition which= better wreslters. I could be wrong though.

I remember an old wrestling coach saying how when kids came back after they graduated they would always beat the high school kids even though they werent training at the time. He said it was because of confidence; youre not gonna want to lose to a high school kid.

I, personally, think it has a lot to do with strength. Ive gone up against high school wrestlers in jiu jitsu that are the same size as me and beaten them in take downs every time, even though I barely wreslted in high school and its been more than 5 years since then but Im a lot stronger.

I recently just beat a wrestler that placed 3rd in state (FL) pretty convincingly in a wrestling. We were the same size. I'm 20, and he's 18. I didn't wrestle in highschool, so I found it pretty weird that I beat him.

Im from Illinois, so no. best Greco-Roman state in the Nation. top 5 in folkstyle, probably top 3 in freestyle

It has to do with so many of the top wrestlers working at universities now instead of coaching at high school level. High schools in the States will pay top wrestlers to coach their teams, same goes for their univerisities. Top wrestlers in Canada coach at univerisities like Guelph and work at Xtreme Couture. HSs do not have the funding in Canada for proper wrestling coaches.

Wrestling has always been pretty popular in my neck of the woods (West Michigan) but has absolutely exploded in recent years. We share our BJJ/MMA school with an elite wrestling school. There are loads of multiple time state champ studs there.

My HS's wrestling program was cut due to budget restraints and my former coach caught with cocaine in his system.....

So I'd have to say yes there is some decline.

No, St. Paris Graham (one of the top 2 programs year in and out) is right in my area. The training they offer to area wrestlers around here, keeps the level pretty damn high.

yeah I heard swossa didn't exist. It was just wossa and it had all of the teams from Sarnia, Windsor and London and surrounding small communites all in one region. So if you qualified for ofsaa(by getting 1st or 2nd at swossa) you were pretty much set to place top 4 at ofsaa. And yes Trevor Dan Dyk was an absolute killer. He had a full scholarship to Iowa State I believe and he had a motorcycle accident and that ended his career. He actually came out to the local wrestling club in my last year of highschool and he beat the shit outta us. He was so outta shape, but the guy has so much heart, you would literally have to kill him to beat him! We have a bunch of guys who were great in highschool and quit afterwards because unfortunately Sarnia is one of those bum towns were everyone grows up here and never leaves living the rest of their lives here. I guess it happens in a lot of small towns. The Harada brothers(Adam and Chris) did really good after highschool. They wrestled out in BC at Simon Fraser. Adam actually was killing Jamie Macari 10-3 at Jr Provincials in 2003 and nobody and I MEAN NOBODY ever scored that many points on Jamie when he was in his prime, not even at the senior world championships where he represented Canada. All his matches were a lot closer than that. But unfortunately Macari some how came back and pinned him. Adam quit shortly after that. Maybe he will come back some day. His brother Chris is still wrestling and is doing awesome. He won the US nationals in Folkstyle, a couple of national titles in Canada in Freestyle. He won his pool at nationals last year for the Olympics but lost to Cleo NCcube(no shame), who lost to Haislan Garcia who represented Canada in the Olympics in Beijing. Chris actually beat Hailsan 2 years before in the finals at nationals.

They don't teach paragraphs at schools in Sarnia? SCITS or St. Pat's.

Coincidentally, TVD was the ref in the match where I claim I was robbed. I was behind on points and threw the guy straight to a pin. He was flat on his back pushing his way out of bounds, not bridging. TVD called it out of bounds. Afterwards I asked him about it and he just shrugged, you call 'em like you see 'em. Nice guy. Great wrestler. Shitty about the accident.

In WOSSA, you had to place top 2 to go to OFSAA. It was a tough go.

Also, Beal RULES!

Haha were just brain damaged from all the chemicals we breath in from the Chemical plants :) I went to St.Christophers which didn't have a team until I was in grade 10. We didn't have a legit coach until I was in my second year of grade 12(did a victory lap). Now we have John Burke who coaches at the wrestling club and coaches the provincials teams and coached sarnia wrestling legends over the years like TVD, Richard Kelley, Greg Blois, Harada Brothers, Ryan Huckle, Chris Dekonging etc..

Did you wrestle with a guy at Beal first names Jamie? He's native. He wrestled at ofsaa in 1994-1995 I believe and got 5th at 67.5kg, but he said he should of gotten first, just had an off day. He came out to my Judo club with some other guys from the London Judo club like in 2002. They never came back because our judo club FUCKING SUCKS!

Illinois is not that good.

PA owns IL easy as does NJ, NY, OH.

And whoever the guy is form FL that said he owned a guy who took 3rd from FL I would like to know who the kid is.

Fl is weak outside of Brandon but I am calling Bullshit.
