Has anyone else ever had to awkwardly explain to a casual fan what an interim title is?

I never realized how bullshit the interim title is until a female friend who is a very very casual UFC fan asked me during a UFC event. When I explained it to her the look on her face was priceless. She was completely confused.
Her: “So the real champion loses his title until he comes back and beats the interim champ?”
Me: “No. The real champ still has the real title.”
Her: “So both of them have titles?”
Me: “Yes, but one of them is an interim title.”
Her: “So the interim champ loses his title once the real champ is able to fight again?”
Me: No, they fight for the title.
Her: For which title?
Me: The real title.
Her: So then what was the point of the interim title?
Me: ummm...

I know the UFC is going overboard with these interims, but the concept still seemed to make sense to me until I actually had to explain it.

Lol its a tough sell to someone not familiar with the disasters of individual/combat sports. Pointless in most situations honestly. Barao the only decent exception I can think of off hand

No. Thats never happened to me. I’m so hardcore I watch the fights alone on my laptop, bought through fight pass so the UFC gets all the revenue and none goes to the cable company

Fixed.

I've had a couple of people ask me why interim title fights aren't just number 1 contender fights. But I always point to the notion that with number title eliminator fights there are no real guarantees and with the interim belt you at least have something tangible saying you are going to fight the full on champ when he/she is ready to fight.

That said, interims were far easier to understand when they were rarer- like, for instance, Barao when Cruz was so badly injured he missed two plus years of combat. At that point it was touch and go when or if Cruz could come back and until they knew he was going to be gone too long to justify keeping the belt, interim was a good move.

But with Romero and Rockhold it is so strange. Not nearly enough of a passage of time to justify that in my opinion- especially since Bobby Knucks just got promoted to the full on champion recently.

I just live my life refusing to acknowledge interim titles.

It's great.

Inerim championship is needed when the current champ cannot defend the title for a long period of time..

..is it not as simple as that?

It's honestly not a complex concept, and it's not unique to the UFC.

Try explaining weight classes. Several times I’d get someone claiming that a LW would beat Jon Jones, not knowing that they aren’t even in the same division.

Tell her not to worry about it and how taste your peepee

The intern belt guarantees you are the number one contender as well as slotting you to become the true champ if the true champ cannot return in a timely matter. Nothing dumb about intern belts just the way the UFC hands them out/deal with them

Please don't make a thread about the time you explained how crypto-currency works

Nooooooo, that is called an Interim Belt.

I don't know what an " intern " belt is. Someone must be really good at fetching coffee and discrete under the desk blow jobs.

In my opinion, the interim BW title actually meant something. Cruz wasn't ducking or having babies, he had a valid reason for being out. I suppose the WW interim title might qualify as legit too.

Most of the other Interim titles are bullshit marketing staples.
