Counterpart was originally on Starz. It was suggested for me on Amazon Prime.

The sci-fi thriller series from Starz first debuted in 2017 and stars J.K. Simmons who finds the organization he works for can travel to a parallel dimension and Simmons character meets his alternate self who’s fighting in a cold war.

It's another one of those series that you have to watch closely, especially at first to catch what's going on. If you watch it would suggest using subtitles to keep the characters straight because everybody has an "other" that looks exactly like them.

I found it interesting as it explored what caused the counterparts that lived the same lives in their respective worlds that at some points diverged to make them different people. It delves into the different events and choices that make them become who they are.

It takes place after one side turned a virus loose on the other side. I found it ironic watching in the current time of COVID-19.

I don't want to go too deeply into the plot in case somebody decides to watch it.

As the story unfolds and they try to determine what decisions changed people's lives it made me think of a recurring theme in science fiction stories. Some stories postulate alternate universes for each decision a person makes. Since every person makes thousands of decisions in their lifetime and there are about 8 billion people on this planet, There would be nearly an infinite combination of choices made. I know I've thought about how my life might have been different with one different choice. There is the time travel paradox about going back in time and changing something that would change the reality in the time you left from.

I suspect we all have some things we wished we had done differently but did we really have a choice? Not that there is a grand plan but just in the sense of who we were at the time we made the decisions.
