AMC Renews HALT AND CATCH FIRE for a Third Season

AMC is staying the course with Halt and Catch Fire. Despite an infinitesimal viewership, the cable network has renewed the 1980s-set computer drama for a third season with new showrunners, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Season three will again consist of 10 episodes and return to AMC in summer 2016.

Produced in-house by AMC Studios, the pricey drama starring Lee Pace, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy and Kerry Bishe was rebooted after its low-rated freshman season ended with less than 1 million total viewers with seven days of DVR.

The critical darling — under departing showrunner Jonathan Lisco and co-creators/new showrunners Chris Rogers and Chris Cantwell — upped its pace based on viewer feedback for season two and focused more on feminism and the birth of the Internet versus the personal-computing boom.

Despite a second round of rave reviews, the reboot did little to move the needle this summer. With three days of delayed viewing, Halt returned with slightly more than 1 million total viewers — and 464,000 among the key adults under 50 set. Its August season two finale delivered only 887,000 total viewers with three days of DVR growth — and 350,000 among the advertiser-coveted demo.

As for the showrunner change, AMC president of original programming Joel Stillerman noted it was a natural progression and not driven by the show's financials. "Lisco was brought in because Chris and Chris were very young writers and had never had anything produced," he said, calling the transition "seamless": "Jonathan moved on to pursue a passion project of his that predated Halt and left as his legacy Chris and Chris as people he'd mentored who are ready to step up and become showrunners."

    Anyone watching this?

I was looking forward to it and I'd say the first episode didn't disappoint. One thing I'll say is that the show moves really fast. There is virtually no set up here and we are right in the thick of it by the first episode.

I'm afraid we may have seen all of these characters before, but they've got me interested enough to keep watching.

    Rejoice!

I am one of those fans who have been sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the renewal announcement. It was so very weird that so much time passed without hearing anything. I can only imagine all the backroom conversations that were taking place about the renewal.

I'm very happy it was renewed for what I suspect will be a final season.

I am one of the few that did not enjoy the reboot that occured in S2, I loved s1 sociopath joe(who was basically a stand in for Steve Jobs). The constant Mary Sue'ing of Cameron's character became nauseating and everyone became worse besides Gordon's wife and the boss that got out of jail.

    If S1 was a 8.5/10 for me, S2 was more of a 7 or 7.5/10.

I think they made a couple of different mistakes with S2. For one, the men should never have been pushed to the background so that Donna and Cameron could take center stage. Mutiny is a good project and those two characters teaming up is a fine idea, but it should never be the PRIMARY idea. Halt and Catch Fire is first and foremost about Joe and Gordon and the shit that they get into together.

Second, it seemed clear to me that they just didn't know WHAT the fuck to do with Gordon this season. Pretty much his entire plot line was bogus. The illness, the infidelity, him getting blackmailed by his own wife for money. . . All fucking stupid.

Hopefully with season 3 the writers will understand that they need to bring Joe and Gordon back into focus but after the excellent critical reception for season 2 I can't say I'm super hopeful.

It kept my interest and made me interested in watching the next episode.

I actually watched it before it's official premiere on Sunday. It was already on amctv for a week before it aired on the station.

Can you give a few examples of how Cameron was a Mary Sue? She has been consistently portrayed as deeply flawed.

Watched the advance premiere. Can't wait for the second episode. Looks promising. A charismatic guy trying to work his charm and wits to a nerd, really interesting. I'm curious to see who gets the better of who or will they actually be friends and money/success will be the one to break them apart.

Loved season one and enjoyed two, although it was a bit of a disappointment. Almost all Gordon's scenes were pretty depressing.

    TTT for episode 2.

I think this has potential to be something big. The writing and acting is pretty good and I love that feeling of watching a show from the 80's. I notice it right after commercial breaks. The purposely downgraded the film quality or something.

In the scene where his shirt is ripped, his "I was a 9 year old" speech seemed very ham-handed. I thought it was due to poor execution by the actor but later we find out it's because he was bullshitting all along. In my opinion this is going to be a show where you can trust the writing and the actors and just enjoy what you're seeing.

Exactly. What the fuck? What were they even thinking there?

My understanding is that one of the writers is essentially under pressure from his wife to move the women to the front. The fuck?

That is the selling point of the show. It will feature 80s music in an 80s setting. But isnt there another show about the same subject on the premium movie channels? I forget the name.

It is supposed to be a time piece of whatever you call it. But I really would rather watch a show about crime in the 80s, that is not like the those cheesy cop dramas of the 80s but more realistic, and can feature all the 80s music. By the way I do like those cop dramas from the 80s.

I'm caught up. I like it so far. I like that I have no idea where it's going. The journey of trying to create the worlds first laptop is damn interesting.

Caught up to ep 4 as of about 5 mins ago.

I like the show. It's not perfect. My main complaint is that it's over-dramatized and I probably WOULD prefer a show that was focused more on the historical realities of the technology than on the drama. But even with that said, I think it's a SOLID show and I'm enjoying it, not only for the 80s setting but also for the (fictional) walk down history lane.

For anyone who likes Halt and Catch Fire, you may also like Micro Men. I haven't seen it yet but I have heard good things and I know it's about the computer boom in the UK in the 70s and 80s.

I just got done watching episode 5 and I think it brought the show up a notch in terms of quality. There were some really good moments here exploring familial relationships and it was also good to see Cameron really step it up, gain some confidence, and invest herself 100% into what's going on at Cardiff.

Personally, I'd give the premiere a 9 and thought it was an excellent way to start the show. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed in episodes 2, 3 and 4 and thought they fell more in the 7 to 7.5 range (still good, but not quite living up to the promise of the pilot). But with episode 5 I felt like the show rebounded and would give it a strong 8, leaning toward an 8.5.

I have little hope that the series will be renewed, but after last night I have a little more hope that it could be.

Just binge watched the first 5 episodes so now I'm caught up.

The show is similar to mad men in a way, which is my favorite show, so thats a good thing. While, MM is all 60s, HCF is all 80s. They have to do with booming industries in those decades: advertising and programming. They both have a lead guy who is a great showman with an strange past and shaky head. Both involve small firms trying to make it big by being overly ambitious. etc I could keep going. I for one do not mind the similarities because i love MM and think its an effective format.

    Couple comments/questions i have:

-Is Joe gay or did he do that just to screw up the deal, which if the case makes him one ballsy and ruthless SOB.

-Why did Jow get his ass kicked by the police? Was that John the boss setting that up?

-The show moves very fast and doesnt tell you when things happen right away. For example, there was no announcement that Cameron finally finished the bios.
