So as I have been expanding my game, I've been studying some half guard, and I was wondering how does lockdown, mesh, with butterfly?

Using the lockdown in a half-butterfly mix doesn't work. You have to be deep in half guard to use the lockdown. But using a butterfly hook with your low side leg in half guard is awesome. A lot of good sweeps are there and transitions into deep half or x guard are available.

I've had some good success circling a hook to the outside and over the opponents leg to pull it out to the side disrupting his base - from there making sure to get the underhook, levering and coming up into my knees and driving in for a knee tap style take down.

If they push back into you with a wizzer or refuse to go over I roll back the other way with their momentum. If you find yourself flattened, but with the underhook - I will grab the foot for old school style sweep.

That first half guard sweep is money though, and a lot of people just fall over if you really commit to pulling the leg to the side and have a nice deep underhook once you get to your knees.

It's a fairly easy transition from butterfly when you are hand fighting, or if your first sweep get stuffed and you already had the underhook.

If you're talking about half-butterfly guard, I don't really have anything for you.

If you are looking for ways to transition into butterfly from half guard, then I have some options you can explore.

If you can get an overhook and feed their cross lapel, you can hip out to make space for your top leg, then put your top hook in, scoot your hips back again, square up and push into them to get your next hook in.

If you have the underhook, if they pull back, I can often follow them up and insert my top hook there.

Also, someone posted this on r/bjj, but it's a nice technique from bottom half which results in your basic butterfly sweep.

This technique compliments the above fairly well.
